Remember when you got your first proper big bike?

Do you remember the day when you got your first proper big bike, e.g. 400cc, 600cc +.
Were you scared at all? What was going through your mind?
'Yeah I'll try and hit top speed today'
Yeah I'll do a wheelie at the traffic lights today'
Haha just wondering what it feels like because i'm still on a 125 and it dosen't feel neither slow nor fast but its only got 15BHP and I wonder what it'll be like on a 160BHP+ bike.

First time I rode a big bike was when my Dad let me have a go on his SV650. Before then I'd only ever ridden various 125's, and god it felt immensely powerful in comparison.

First big bike I owned was my ER5 which although is torquey isn't massively powerful really..

I went straight from a 125 to a 500.

The difference in power was unearthing, the shear acceleration. My senses couldn't react quick enough.

I went from a XT125X to a restricted bandit 400 and even though it was only 33hp i thought 'bloody hell this is quick' and i was scared to put the throttle on the stop.

That was until after about a day and if it was clear and there were no bobbies around i'd have a quick blast. Even though i got used to its top speed after about a week (on private land of course) i still loved the acceleration between the twisties.

First time I full throttled my 400 I felt like I was going to shit my pants, it literally felt like I was 'ripping the sound-barrier a new one'. This was going from an Aprilia RS125 to a 400. I shudder to think of those that get on a bigger bike with only previous experience of a 4-stroke 125...

power felt stupid and was a nightmare to turn, apparently the shop forgot to check head bearings when they did an mot when they sold it to me....

I got a 375cc overbored RD350 YPVS just after I passed my test (on a 125).

The guy in the shop warned me to be carefull if I pushed the revs over 6k because "It goes like shit off a wet shovel." and that I would be well advised to be holding on tight and pointing in a straight line.

He was 100% correct. Held the throttle open in 3rd gear to 6,000rpm. One 80mph wheelie later I found myself about a mile up the road, sitting on the ground next to said motorcycle on its stand and shitting a brick because I now had to get back on it and ride the thing home.

In fairness, I got the same "What the fucking hell am I doing sitting on this thing" effect every time out.

I miss my TDR, i guess it counts as a big bike, it certainly kept up alright around the twistys, but no it didnt feel overwhelmingly fast, just very very fun! unfortunatly my GPZ is not so fun.

I went from a 125 Superdream to a Honda XBR 500 big single cylinder thing. It certainly never felt that fast to me, it just plodded along.

I jumped from cbt to das to my cbr.
The 125 i did cbt on was just as per. My first big bike lesson on an er-5 felt like it was a pocket rocket lol. Didnt ever take it 'into the power' an it still felt quick.
Passed my test and jumped on the cbr 600, tbh a little scary when i realised how quick it was compared. My first few days i wasnt taking it over 7 8k and it felt stupid quick lol. I remember the first time i leathered it in first and took it all way to redline, literal words in my helmet were 'F**K ME'. Loved it since

I went from a CBR125 to a GSXR 600K4, i remember the day like it was yesterday.
I parted with my cash and it was time to ride home, just before i threw my leg over the bike the previous owner was telling me how the bike was very powerful and it would wheelie in 1st, 2nd and 3rd so i should take it easy, As if i wasn't shitting it as it was.
I got on and had to squeeze past his car that was parked on his driveway but instead of knocking it into first and riding past it i pushed the bike down the drive and then when i was pulling away from the side of the road i stalled it 3 times while he was watching me

As soon as I passed my test I got a CX500 (don't laugh, well too much) ... but my first big bike was a GS1000 (same as someone above) .... paaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaarty

Remember when I picked it up, damp roads, cobblestones and some awesome power made it a very enjoyable run home.

Only difference with a big bike is mainly the weight and the power ... the power is in your control so is not a problem if you take your time, otherwise a bigger bike is easier to ride than a smaller bike I'd say.

God yeah, I remember it well!!!

I dont consider a 400 a big bike, but I remember going from my ZXR400 to a highly tuned ZXR750L and being absolutly blown away by how fast it was in comparason! I opened it up in 3rd and just flew past 100 with ease!!

This was on a test ride as I was thinking of buying it. Needless to say I got back to the then owners house and told him straight away I was buying it!

Rolled out of the dealer on my brand new FZ6 S2 a week after passing the DAS on a CBF600. Hyuge tank, a bit jerky and smelly due to the new engine and gearbox. I headed straight home, 5 minutes away. forgot to adjust my mirrors so I pulled up in a layby to sort them out then sat there for a good five minutes crapping myself about pulling back out.

Didn't really prepare my riding position for when I opened it up the first time, ended up gripping the bars for dear life. Took a new '08 R6 for a ride a couple of months later (Really want one now!) and the dealer was offering me a go on a CBR100RR Fireblade or FZ1 at some point. Looking forward to trying out some of the 150bhp+ bikes, let alone a 180bhp Cbr.

I went from a RS125 to a GSXR-600. The dealer had fitted new tyres and it had begun to rain when I picked the bike up!

I struggled in the workshop area to get it started [figuring out which set off beeps meant the alarm was off and forgetting to pull the clutch in ] and rode 5 minutes to a petrol station. I just couldn't believe the acceleration and the riding position seemed really tall.

I don't think I have ever rode so carefully apart from on my test day but I had a massive smile all the way home.

The first time you pin the throttle on a big bike is something that you will always remember but sadly you lose that exhilaration with time...

Yeah - i remember it well. I did only pick it up on Monday night though!

I have a '98 GSX600F. Was absolutely bricking it for first few miles - was a completely different experience to the chinese 125 i had been riding for the past few months. Nearly a week on and i am starting to feel a little more comfortable with the power although still not giving it anywhere near full throttle! Its true what they say they - you only start learning how to ride after you pass your test

I remeber the whole event like it was yesterday - i won my ZX6R off ebay, beating another bidder to the tune of £2.73 lol! My mate was also watching the auction and upon realising i won, he offered to pick up the bike with me on pillion - that was when all the shits and giggles started with him trying to show how much of a man he was by taking me down the M5 to gloucester from donnington doing 140mph for a short period of time (i looked on his clocks and couldn't believe it). Maintaining a steady ton 20, we arrived.

The sellers looked like a pleasant family - we got the paper work sorted, they advised me of the funnest route back home and offered me advice on where to really stretch the bike's legs out. I felt castrated though because i had to carry a pannier kit loaded with sapres .

Seating position felt completely different to my ZXR250, it was like a commuter by comparison. Starting that button, i was welcomed by that typical kawasaki rattle/ticking from the airbox which sounded roarty through the race can. The mid range was a great welcome and since i was used to the powerband kick on my 250, the surge at 8k was of no surprise, the only difference being that the scenery passed at a greater rate of knots than on the 250. Overall, i felt underwhelmed and I didn't know whether it was me or the bike, i couldn't gel with it. I knew that it wasn't meant to be a good handler, but compared to my old pocket rocket, it was pants. It's really disappointing when you feel that you could have ridden your old bike faster. Needless to say, after all the time I've had with the bike, i'm starting to understand the fun it can offer, but it's taken me 2 years to realise that rather than instantly.

Have to admit my YPVS scared the shit out of me first time I rode it.... lots of ending up sat on the pillion seat and long low wheelies in first and second which were not requested. Four strokes are pretty cuddly by comparison as along as you don't twist the throttle like a retard and run out of road.

When I went to pick up my 250 I was a little nervous about actually riding it, as soon as I got on the motorway all those worries disappeared though.

I went from a FS1E to my Xj600 diversion.
Pulled away after getting it serviced with 6k slipping the clutch.
Throttle was a lot more sensitive than my little fizzy.
Dad was following me in the car and he said I just had a massive smile on my face all the way home.
Wasn't scared at all had a nice gentle ride home, got myself something to eat, then buggered off for 9 hours getting used to the power.
I was comfortable with it within a few days.
