 |
|
I used to skate about 6-7 years ago when I lived in Aylesbury. Used to skate around town and quite often ended up going to Milton Keynes or PSSP in London (now known as bay 66 I think) I remember I used to skate about 8 hours a day on Saturdays and Sundays and for a good couple of hours or more during weekdays. Only used to have either one big break (hour) or a couple of small ones.
Recently I've started getting into it after a guy at work started talking to me about skating. Talked about the old times. Felt a bi nostalgic and set about building my skateboard again by buying new things... AS I somehow misplaced my old one (which was good, although deck and bearings would need replacing)
So... I bought new bearings, trucks, risers, bushings and bolts thinking I could use my old deck I had lying around (which is quite fucked) and some old wheels I used to have (Think they were spitfire or speed demons and are so so tiny from the use!) Only problem with the deck was it had no "pop" left and jsut didn't feel right. And the wheels... well the outer casing of the old bearings got stuck and tried all sorts to get the fucker out but no go. So I decided to buy some new wheels. Popped into my local BBC (Bucks Boarding Centre) and bought some 52mm Autobahns, looked at some skate shoes, put a deposit on them (and bought them the next day and saw a nice black and white chequered board by Speed demons which was only 25 quid... So I bought them all
I think I spent about 100 quid on the whole set which isn't bad. Speed demons didn't make decks (as far as I knew) when I used to skate but I'm seriously impressed by this whole set up.
I've realised how unfit I am now. Used to be able to skate for 8 hours a day. No 5-10 minutes trying tricks in my room makes me sweat like a pig Tipycally I had to get into it when the whether is shit and wet
Any other skaters? Any tricks? ____________________ '99 Hornet 600 , VFR 400 NC30 '92 , Kasawamasaki GT 550 , '98 Hornet 600

I havent skated in about 5 years now, well not properly. Last time i tried i failed dramatically.
Dragged my old mess around setup out of the shed and laid it on the pavement in my back garden, took a long run up and jumped onto it, braced for a quick takeoff and ready for a trick or two... landed on the deck and straight away went over the front as the bearings had siezed solid. Havent tried again since.
Back in 'the day', i had a nice Blind deck with World Industries trucks, bearings, no risers (gives you a better kick when you pop up - just hurts a little more when you land).
Used to be relatively good at it, always enjoyed it.
The two moments which realy stay in my mind are; 1) When we got surrounded at the local school for skating there over a weekend, they class it as breaking and entering + criminal damage as we moved a few chairs that had been left outside to give a clearer run up and used some cardboard from a skip to make a ramp up the stair set as a flat bank. They surrounded the whole school and even sent a copper chopper that ended up following us all the way home to make sure, after we got a stearn telling off! and 2) being chased from the 6th level of a multistory car park that was always used by skaters as no one ever parked there. Two security guards runnign behind us as me and alan raced down the ramps on our boards ... god that was fun!
(Notice my favourite memories had nothing to do with tricks or actually skating lol) ____________________ CBT Aug '03 ... Gilera GSM 50 ... Honda NSR 125 Aug '04 ...

Haha being chased is always good fun.
I've skated through the two shopping centres in Aylesbury and been chased. Really good fun. And since it's marble it's really really smooth to ride and awesome good fun for sketching (think it was called) and making those noises. Love them.
I want it to dry again ffs! ____________________ '99 Hornet 600 , VFR 400 NC30 '92 , Kasawamasaki GT 550 , '98 Hornet 600

I totaly forgot about the shopping centers!
Queensgate was awsome for it! We once did a complete lap of a shopping center on the marble floor, before one of us got collar'd by a security guard and we got banned for a week or something ____________________ CBT Aug '03 ... Gilera GSM 50 ... Honda NSR 125 Aug '04 ...

This post is useless without pics!
I tried skating for a few months once but didn't get any further than ollieing up kerbs and falling off so I went back to MTB's instead! Has made me realise how hard skating is and when I see good skaters at my local park and I can't help but respect thier skills ____________________ Now: '00 Kawasaki ZRX1100R - Past: '84 Yamaha DT125, '89 Kawasaki KLR600, '97 Yamaha XJ600N

I'm so chuffed I can still land 360 flips I might be able to get a video or two uploaded (but only done from my room ) ____________________ '99 Hornet 600 , VFR 400 NC30 '92 , Kasawamasaki GT 550 , '98 Hornet 600

Yeah, this is pure nostalgia
Summer of 2001 onto summer 2003 coinciding with the insurgance of pop-punk/nu-metal, we were always down Harrow Skate Park and Harrow Town Centre... Occasionally, we used to go to south bank. We thought we were the dog's danglies down on the underground; 3/4 length torn jeans, DC's and Vans and quiksliver baggy shirts! EVERYBODY was at my house playing Tony Hawk's pro skater 1-3 so the scene was set for a good 3 years.
Hell, we even used to bring our skate boards into music studios and do ollies and kickflips into it.
My dad was never happy with me buying a skateboard... he issued an ultimatum that if I bought even a £50 quid board, i can kiss goodbye to the £400 ibanez guitar which he eventually bought me. Sod that, my mates had 50 quid tensor trucks, blind decks were pretty common... i simply couldn't justify myself to it.
I suppose for me, the whole scene fitted with the growing up phase of my life, meeting the mates that I've got now and getting me well interested into the sort of music I listen to know - it's pure nostalgia. Back then, in year 9, if you weren't a skater, you were nothing!
It all stopped when i sprained my ankle and took a big hit on the head whilst in London.... admittedly, i was very very pants - could only ollie, was more of the guy that tagged along with the serious lads. ____________________ The Tot 2019 Z1000SX - 2007 R1

Fortunately I was the "better" one out of the 3 skaters. One was the guy who was good in ramps (not that much more tbh), the other was just a nutter who could ollie better and ollie loads of steps, some that I wouldn't even attempt. But I could do the tricks. And I taught them how to kickflip and heelflip.
I might go to Aylesbury and skate old places there. Need to get back into the rhythm. ____________________ '99 Hornet 600 , VFR 400 NC30 '92 , Kasawamasaki GT 550 , '98 Hornet 600

Venture trucks are good. Always preferred Tensor or independent though. Thunders are good too.

What's the hardest thing about skateboarding?
Telling your parents that you're gay

I could do drop-ins and roll-ins but that was about it, i even struggled on funboxes sometimes!
Much prefered making my own sections / runs from the surroundings as i went along. Also its free to street skate, no entrance fee and no waiting for people to move out of the way!
The downside was that when you hurt yourself, its a long and lonely walk home, as you never want to ring your parents to ask them to pick you up from the school that you made your own way into, on a saturday ____________________ CBT Aug '03 ... Gilera GSM 50 ... Honda NSR 125 Aug '04 ...

Haha, true. Although my old school didn't mind as long as we didn't ruin anything.
I could do nose and tail stalls, grind a bit, 180 nose or indy grab and kickflip on ramps, but I could do so much more on street set ups.
In PSSP there's a massive flatbank, up a guarter pipe, down a roll on and up a tiny tiny quarter pipe (and if you really push you can get so much air) and I managed to do kickflip to indy and crossbones. I used to have pictures but they're long gone. Looked and felt awesome. ____________________ '99 Hornet 600 , VFR 400 NC30 '92 , Kasawamasaki GT 550 , '98 Hornet 600

I do miss those days, the feeling when you finally land that trick you've been battling to master for weeks!
I still remember my first "Method" grab down the 6 set at the school, i had been trying for about 3 weeks to get a decent grab and land smoothly. I finally landed it as i was leaving school on a friday, with 2 of my mates going before me to break the crowd of chatting school kids so we had a clean run behind them (there was abotu 6 of us! It was soo cool!).
Landed it in front of about 30 kids, i was well chuffed!
Then it turned into a 180 grab down them, then a 180 heelflip to grab It was soo cooooool!
Only thing was, i could NEVER kickflip! I dont know why, i could do most other things, even things that included a kickflip as part of them, but i could never land a kickflip!
Remember the skate videos you used to make? I remember the one we made at the school that day (well filmed for parts of it), when Alan opened filming that day with casper slides and variated tricks... flatlanding was the ultimate! ____________________ CBT Aug '03 ...
