Okay, I need some advice. I have a pay as you go tariff with Vodafone, had it for yonks, I quite like the idea of keeping current mobile since I know it by heart.

Which other mobile companies offer the best deals?

All I want is to do the odd bit of calling and a few texts. I generally don't top up monthly, more like £20 every 6-8 weeks (I use email and msn to stay in touch generally).

I've looked at O2 and it's seemingly a good deal, but I want other opinions...please!

Orange offer a couple of reasonable P-A-Y-G tarrifs :
Dolphin for £10 a month top up you get 300 texts free
Canary for £10 a month top up you get 120 any network evening and weekend calls free.
All non-free calls are approx 20p per minute and texts are 10p so your £10 would get either 50 minutes of calls or 1000 texts
You need to check your phone will take an orange sim, it may have been locked to Vodafone but you can either get someone who knows how to do it for nothing (if they like you) or shop will do it for about £10 - £15 from memory.

Do you know if the above tariffs are ONLY if you spend £10 a month, or IF you spend £10 a month you get x, y, z??

What I mean is, if you don't put £10 on the phone each month you lose the xxx texts? Or each time you top up with £10 you receive xxx texts, and you get more if you top up with more cash.

My phone isn't a Vodafone phone, I got it years ago whilst on a different contract, then changed to a Vodafone simcard, so technically it should be okay. I hope.

I'm on O2. When I top up £10 I get 300 free texts for a month. So if I used up all 300 (I've never even come close) or 30days has gone by, then I have to start paying for texts again.

When you ring up to change provider, they will grovel to you, and give you all these 'amazing' deals.

I use o2 umlimited. £10 get your free unlinted text a month and £15 gets you free o2 to o2 calls and free umlimited 02 texts. All my friends are o2 and I have a hard time tryimg to spend the money I put into it as I use the free calls and texts. This is why I have no need to use my house phone and download games with money. Suits me fine.

Do a postcode check,, they didnt work where i was for years and now this past year they work everywhere here. Just ask for the unlimited sim card.

I just bought a Tesco mobile.

It was £20 and came with a £10 voucher for talk time. I registered the phone for their special tarriff wich gives me a free tenners worth credit over the next 30 days for every tenner I put on it.

I then bought a text bundle for half price using that free £10.

Sooo. I now have 200 texts to use over this month and a tenner of credit and a new phone, all for £20. I'd have got clubcard points too if I had one.

Tesco piggyback O2 masts.

I'm still looking for the downside.

I've got a Tesco PAYG. 10p a minute to all numbers. 10p a text. You can have 3 numbers which are 5p a minute and 5p a text.

Works out about the same as the £15 a month deals with the 'free' minutes for me. I've been with them for a few year and never had coverage probs or anything to complain about. No commitment either.

I've also got tesco payg. At all the deals I looked at this was the best one especially as like you I don't use it a great deal.

Cool...do you have to buy a phone for Tesco PAYG? My one is plenty good enough for my needs.

02 Simplicty 600 text 400 mins or other way round
£20 a month and was worth it. I went back onto contract soon after just for a new phone. Wish I had stayed on Simplicity now.
It is a contract, but 1 month at a time which is ideal -

Right, got this sorted out now, ta for all input, I went out and got the Tesco sim, and I stuck a wodge of credit on ready for the Xmas obligatory phone calls (for which Tesco matched, then doubled)!!!

Oh and you get 5 numbers (mobile or landline) for a cheaper deal, which is great for me.

I was having a wee giggle to myself there in thinking tesco value sim card and imaging it wiith the stripes down it. and then I googled for a laugh to see if I could get a funny pic and turns out thats what they do look like

I am not sure if anyone would appreciate this birthday card though.
