The village of Burn on the A19 near Selby, North Yorkshire is pushing for fixed speed cameras. Up until now North Yorkshire and Durham were the only two counties without fixed cameras. Yet
Yorkshire Post wrote:
...new Chief Constable Grahame Maxwell, an advocate of the cameras, was starting talks with councils about introducing them in his force's area, saying rule changes now made a partnership viable...

...Burn residents have written to Mr Maxwell asking to be the first location to trial the cameras – and invited him and Selby MP John Grogan to visit Burn, which straddles the A19 south of Selby, to see the problems themselves.

Burn Residents' Action Group (BRAG) was formed after a survey revealed what organisers describe as "a shocking catalogue of hell caused by heavy traffic"....

Thin end of the wedge me thinks, despite Swindon Council's vote to dismantle its existing camera system.

So expect to see them every 100 meters on the approach to Squires then.

May just be me but I read "...saying rule changes now made a partnership viable..." as "...rule changes mean there's money to be made out of this..."

Just going off to see who I can complain to.

Full report if you click here.

If people didn't ride through the towns going to and from Squires like twats, this would not be an issue.

They do and it is.

Nobody to blame but themselves.

Especially considering some parts of the village/town thing are actually a 20 zone.

Whats wrong with popping it in a higher gear and keeping the revs low until you pass through, it may take you 30 seconds longer but so what.

I would go out on a limb and say that on some stretches of the A64, Specs average speed cameras would be useful.

Not due to bikes. Far from it.

The bigger issue on that road is the executives and upper class folk overtaking illegally and bullying normal road users out of the way. Gatso's will not work.

I used to work round North Yorks and the majority of drivers do slow down in residential areas. This plea sounds like residents moaning cos burn is on the main route to the M62 and York.

To the residents of York, a day without finding something to write an indignant letter to the York Post/Daily Mail about is a day not worth getting out of bed for.

Maybe they could follow any apparently speeding motorists home and leave a snotty note written in green biro on lilac paper affixed to their windscreen like they do if you park perfectly legally on the street but in "their" parking space.

It would have been relatively inexpensive and painless
to have by-passed Burn at the time the Selby by-pass
was itself being constructed.

It's a small village, why shouldn't they be entitled to enjoy
it in safety and peace?

Now the residents of the village have invited the Chief Constable
of North Yorkshire to install speed cameras there!

Once the speed cameras get a toe-hold in the area you can
bet the Selby by-pass will be SPECSed. Then the A19 to
York, and beyond, will be targeted for the camera treatment. Crying or Very sad

I don't live in Burn, nor do any of my relatives or friends.
Though, I do occasionally pass through.
