I have two appointments and the first one is a week today to remove two on one side.

Im totally shitting it. I cant stand tooth pain and i avoided going for years. ( Rolling Eyes Laughing )

It depends. If you get a decent dentist and he manages to inject the anasthetic into the nerves (ganglia? no sniggering at the back!) properly, you won't feel much at all. If you're lucky, the teeth being removed have dead nerves.

You might want to ask about gas/valium, if you are really nervous.

Or do it yourself Smile

Hold onto the dentist's balls and squeeze gently. Then look him in the eye and say, "we're not going to hurt each other are we!".

This year I've had three wisdom teeth removed and one molar, the one wisdom and one molar were taken out at the same time, no drilling/cutting/stitching, just a large dose of Novacaine and twisted the fuckers right out...

They were starting to cause me considerable pain and Southern Comfort wasn't even stopping it, I hate dentists so going of my own accord stunned everybody lol...

Only concern is I have a high tollerance to Novacain so it wears off really quickly, I felt the wisdom coming out but for the sake of two minutes I just gripped the chair and waited, was a relief when it was out...

Oh and they gave me a sheet saying don't drink lager or smoke for 24 hours !!! Yeah right I was straight in the pub over the road lol...

If you have a real problem with it, they can do it all under sedation..you won't know a thing then!

NHS or Private?
NHS have fixed rates, and I think it's £22 ish for a tooth removal...no matter how many you have removed at once, it's the same price.

get em pulled, the pain of toothache is much much much much worse than the couple of hours discomfort from having a poorly tooth yanked.

but make sure you use a salt water mouthwash to prevent getting a dry socket which is considerably more painful than toothache nd can cause nasty infections.

Well first and foremost, if you are in pain just ask for more anaesthetic. They're not there to cause you pain. The anaesthetic works in a way which should take away the pain from the tooth, but what it doesn't take away the sensation of having it removed - if you see what I mean...basically you will prob feel the thing moving about in it's socket, but it shouldn't be painful - it's got to do with the fact that different nerves transmit different sensations and the anaesthetic used in dentistry targets the pain ones. If you are having problems getting numbed up, chances are that there is a wee bit of infection at the base of the tooth (most likely the case if the nerves is dead) - the infection basically de-natures the anaesthetic in that area and makes it not work quite as well, but there are other anaesthetics which they can use in this situation which can be injected directly to the tooth to almost by-pass the infection. Either way, if this is the case, you can guarantee that as soon as the tooth there will be instant and massive relief of pain.

Listen to the post operative instructions and stick to them as you don't want to risk getting post op infection - or dry socket (which is a form of gangrene, just to spell out how unpleasant it feels, tastes and smells to have it!!!). Basically the most important one though is not to smoke. The nicotine in cigarettes vastly reduces the blood supply to the gums, which greatly reduces the ability of the gums to effectively wash away any possibly infection. Not good. About 80-90% of the people I see with post op infection have smoked. The alcohol thing is less important - have a drink or two, but don't go out on the piss. The main things are don't smoke, try not to dislodge the clot, use the hot salty mouth-rinse (oooh-err matron Wink ) and avoid small foods like rice which may get stuck in the sockets and you're giving yourself the best chance of it healing properly.

On the charges front, NHS are the only ones which are fixed - private can vary widely between practices. If you are in England i think (don't quote me on this though cause I'm in Scotland and it's a different system up here) that having two teeth out qualifies you under the 'Band 2' treatment bracket which is £44.60. Think it's about £10 per tooth in Scotland, but I don't really deal with that side of things.

Hope this helps somewhat. Any other questions, just ask

After a recent trip to the dentist I would recommend stocking up on co-codamol and take one before you go, and take the recommended dosage when allowed for the next 24 hours. make sure you have plenty painkillers in stock for the following week as your jaw is going to be sore where the tooth is removed from.
Ensure you rinse with salt water as recommended to ensure you dont get an infection and any concerns ring the dentist up immediately.

Jewish ?

On a serious note, its going to hurt but the relif you will feel will be much better!

Had a wisdom and molar removed last year, I was in utter agony as the wisdom was growing into the molar. After they pulled the molar I complained it was hurting and he injected more anesthetic into the gum and all was good again.

Look after it when you have had them pulled. Aftercare is important. Whatever you do dont use mouthwash, just use salt water. 2 teaspoons in a glass of water is enough.

Had a molar removed and got gas and an injection. The injection hadn't kicked in properly but I didn't know until she had started pulling it out. The pain and the gas almost had me halucinating. Laughing

The best painkiller for dental pain is Ibuprofen - provided you can take it (ie no problems with major asthma etc). Take an 800mg dose BEFORE the anaesthetic wears off, then as recommended if you get any pain. The fact it has an anti-inflammatory action is also beneficial too.

If I get a problem with my teeth its always a bloody big one or complicated. No easy problems here!

I have just had a molar removed, but my own dentist said she didn't want to do it as it had been heavily restored previously and she thought it would be a difficult extraction. She sent me to her practice partner and he removed it.

3 sets of injections and 30 minutes of stress and sweat later, the tooth had been removed in at least a dozen pieces with the aid of a drill, the pick and a pair of pincers.

It was removed at 12.30 and I managed to stop the bleeding at 10.30 or so that evening.

Now the reason I go into detail is this - even though it was a hellish experience which left me literally shaking with adrenaline for an hour or so - the pain wasn't that bad and I needed no painkillers afterwards.

Now toothache - thats a bitch... Thumbs Down Thumbs Down

I went for a private check-up after getting an absess in a rotten tooth, I was told I needed two of my teeth removed permanently. That kinda put things into perspective, the doctor even had a go at me due to the condition of them for my age. Laughing

Anyway.. Privately, A 15 minute check-up and dental painkillers set me back £38 followed by the extractions a week later which were £120 per tooth. Extractions were done on different dates, and included cutting, drilling and finally the pliers. Shocked

I was awake the whole time, good thing I'm not squeemish. Yes its an absolutely rip-off but with the pain I was in, its not like it was optional.

To try and get this into perspective (and to not cause un-due alarm to the OP!) this is not normal for an extraction - your teeth must have resembled Rice Krispies NexusDragon!!!

Couldnt wait until Friday because of the pain I was in so I went in today to have them removed.

There was no pain after the anasthetic but the sensation was horrible. I could hear my tooth cracking and moving about. Sick

The anasthetic is wearing off and I have just taken painkillers. Dentist told me to rinse my mouth with warm salty water in 30 mins.

Overall not a nice experience and I have to go back next week to get the two on the other side removed. Crying or Very sad

Thanks for the help. Thumbs Up

Nice one.

So, is there just a hole where the tooth was or do they put some sort of layer over it to stop food getting stuck etc?

Mine bled all day because I kept rinsing my mouth out with water to remove the taste of the blood - which also started it bleeding again...cue the repeating cycle of bleed - rinse - bleed - rinse... Sick

I stopped it by getting a piece of bandage rolled up, covered in micropore tape and just bit down on it. Took 20 or 30 minutes but it clotted up nicely and was fine the next day. Thumbs Up

I imagine that any material will do providing it is lint-free and not covered in poo. Laughing

Hope you get it sorted. Thumbs Up

Cheers, Stopped bleeding now. The salt water did it.

Dentist told me not to rinse my mouth with water as it stops the blood clotting.
