I came home from the pub and turned the TV on. This was on the OGWThttps://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=9ZmqbcBsTAw&feature=related
Still blows my socks off.

Well I'll be damned I never knew he was ever that young.

So the voice, accident or birth defect? Wink

So are you a big fan then, Wali?

A few of my mates at school were into him (ages ago obviously) and whilst some of the songs appealed and he's definately a good songwriter, I personally could never get past the voice and the misery.

Jesus christ. If some bloke came into a pub and started singing like that he'd be thrown through a window.

But it's hip. It's arty. It's 'now'. And blah blah pretentious blah. Anybody want to say the king is wearing no clothes?

Somebody tell the guy to stick to playing the piano, his voice is SHITE. Rolling Eyes

Very much a fan, his voice is unique and I would not describe him as miserable (not in the sense the Smiths were, all Morrisey's angst was focused on himself). Rather he sings of the other side of what is normally perceived as the American dream. Whores, pimps, strippers and one night stands are his subject matter and that voice is perfect for his songs. It is a world of drugs and drunks that he seems totally happy to be in.

What a class thread so far...Tom Waits and John Otway. Two of my favourite singer/songwriters for entirely different reasons.

Just out of interest, me and Mrs Hammers were presented with a bottle of Blue Smirnoff by Mr Otway, for being the best hosts of the coach party when we went abroad on one of his tours. Thumbs Up Very Happy

Totally loveable, he is.

Not keen on Tom Waits. A guy I used to work with loved his music, used to put it on the stereo in the canteen, but it was just a bit too excessively weird for me.

That said, accusing a blues artist of not being able to sing amuses me. None of them can "sing" particularly well. The blues is about storytelling against a background of music. Having a great voice isn't particularly important.
