New bike, zx6r, dropped it, need advice!

Firstly, yes, I feel very stupid. Embarassed

But there you go!
I recently got myself a zx6r j1. First step up to a bigger bike, I've had an NSR125 for 5 years. I love my new bike. it is a thing of beauty. But it's quite a bit more powerful than my wee 125 (yes I know that seems obvious) and a quick twist of the throttle had me slip and end up me on my side, bike on it's side a small distance away.

Basically it's fine apart from the fairing, I managed to damage both the front fairing (1" hole on the right side) and the right side panel (fair amount of scuffs and a broke one of the side mounting points).

I was thinking of trying to fix the panels myself but I'm a bit worried about fixing the mounting point - should I get someone who knows what they're doing to do that?
I've tried breakers but nowhere seems to have red zx6r fairings Sad

I've bought some paint (properly bike-matched paint) and filler already.

I've never had to fix anything like this before and would love any suggestions. I spent all my money buying the bike so I can't really afford simply to buy new Kawasaki panels! Help! (oh and finally, I'm a girl, so don't make sarky comments about my ruining my new bike Crying or Very sad

Can you upload a picture of the damage?

If there's a hole, then it would probably be best to get some glass-fibre reinforcement kit and patch it up from the "inside" first, then put over some filler to smooth it out.

I'm not particularly familiar with Kwak plastics, so I'm not entirely sure what you mean about the "mounting point".

Obviously it would be good for structural integrity if you patched up the hole and mounting point, but do you think that you can live with the scratches for now? Not to tempt fate or anything (or make any implications towards your ability to ride), but it would be gutting if you dropped the bike again after you've fixed it up perfectly.

Alternatively, keep an eye out on Ebay for used panels.

Hi there, I'm affraid I can't offer much help with this one, but there are many people on here that can offer advice (though a good few of them are away this weekend paintballing).

On the other hand welcome to the board, and looking on the bright side at least you are okay, after all, it could have been worse.

There is a thread in General Chat on Breakers, it may be worth trying that, and also perhaps putting a wanted ad in the Exchange and Mart section of the board.

Hopefully somebody will be along to help but... i know how to bodge farings together but if you want it doing properly (which you do really).

In the meantime... at least you don't have to worry about scuffing it again too much, i'd be terrorfied of marking a new bike which is why i'd probably never buy one new (um... or is that because i couldn't afford to buy one new.. hmm....) anyone who says they haven't dropped a bike is..

a. extremely rare (like magic donkeys rare)
b. a liar
c. not ridding very long

Its easy to drop a bike, dropped my cg once on gravel (ow) came close one or two times with the cx but just managed to save it... you will get used to it just try and take it easy.

Put it this way mate of mine had a zzr400 for a year and paid out for....

Side panel - Scum filth stealing petrol snapped it off
Bellypan - Massive pot hole smashed it off (council paid for it though)
Front faring - A SEAGULL! hit it, had gaffer tape and a couple of feathers for a while!

Can't remember how much it was but it certainly racked up a fair bit! so could be worse!

Yea, even people not even on the bike drop it, like me!

I was wheeling it backwards, and i dropped it on the floor, kicked it then picked it up again, i was rather annoyed all night, so I blame my mood

Could be worth investing in some crash mushrooms? Should go someway to protect the farings if it ever has another lay down and would (supposedly) protect the frame and engine casings, OR buy a bike that looks like it fell out of the 70's which has no expensive plastic bits!

i dropped my zx-6 in february i had the same problem...but it really depends on the level of damage?

my right slide crash mushroom actually bent its mount and turned in on it self..it then punched a huge hole in the plastic, this then caused the plastic to almost "shatter", and i was told it would be to hard to repair it.

try ebay?
i got side fairing, top fairing, a new tank for Â£300

if your down south..you should take the time to ride to R&G racing in farnborough(sp) , they will not only give them to you for a cheaper price...but also fit them for free Razz

I have been keeping an eye on ebay but even bits I need that are the wrong colour seem rare. I think my plan is going to be to patch it up as best I can and just live with it until I find a replacement part. My dad helped me get the bits of fairing off today (I am 28 by the way.. saying my dad helped makes me sound like I'm about 18 Laughing

) so there are bits of bike sitting around the house which is very odd indeed! Hopefully I can do a reasonable job on them - it's not hugely damaged I'm hoping some glue and some filler and some paint will do the job.

I've heard about crash mushrooms - are they any good? I've no idea what they are to be honest. Worth getting or not?

Dropping your bike is something that is going to happen to everyone. The bunch on here are all really close, and friendly people, really glad I stumbled upon them earlier in the month.

When i dropped my NSR, i broke off one of the mounting point and pushed the Rattly Plastic Guard mouting point. Went to my Local bike shop, and they sent to Panel straight off to a specialist in Plastic Welding. Cost me Â£30 in all. Then all you have to do is get it painted.

Thanks for the plastic welding idea - I've managed to find a guy relatively close to here who does that sort of thing so I'm going to get the panel to him and see what he thinks. So one panel to a professional, the other to me!

I shall keep and eye out for R+G mushrooms, it sounds like they're a sensible thing to have Smile

thanks Hex, I did wonder about how strong the repair would be, I think I'll take your advice and go for fibreglass + filler.
I've also managed to find a plastic welding place relatively near where I am, so fingers crossed everything will be sorted soon!

If you are going to use fibreglass bewared its a git to sand down but the best policy for farings and well worth the effort.

If the fairings are fibre glass they will stick no prooblems but if they are abs the mend will not be that strong or hold very well.
