Well the time has come to move out i think, as im 22 and im becoming a bit of a burden on my Mum, plus im paying nearly £350 a month to her in rent plus half the food bills.

Now Me and the missus have been looking around and have found a couple of nice ish terraced houses for £350 - £400 a month in Darwen.

Now im wondering, for people who have moved out into rented houses, how much were you paying for:

food bills

Utility bills

other costs.

I earn roughly £900 a month working 40 hours a week from two jobs and my outgoings are

£250 for two loans, petrol, insurance and mobile and obviously i pay my mum here £350.

My missus earns £700 a month, and we intend to split the bills 50/50.

Just wanted a little info on how people get on etc.

My bills are:

Rent
Electric + Gas (I pay about £70 a month)
Phone Line (£11)
Internet
TV (About £200 for a years worth)
Sky
Shopping (£150-£200ish a month)

I'm lucky in the fact I don't pay for water or council tax (£100 a month).

The once I've not priced are because you can put your own figures in there. Wink

One word of advice - make sure you do.

You may be happy together now but don't only put your name on the rental agreement/utilities etc, then find you're stung for everything if you split up somewhere down the line.

Set up a joint account that the bill money will go into, with a standing order from each of your banks to transfer the amounts you've agreed on. Have all the direct debits come out of that account.

That way you won't end up with a situation like Chalky did :-

the name on the utility bills is the sole person responsible.
when i split with my ex, the electricity and water were in mine and the gas and phone were in hers. it wasnt an arrangement at the start it was just the way it always was, i paid everything anyway.
when we split her solicitor said i was responsible for all the bills including the mortgage and they even wanted me to pay maintenance.
the reply was, she pays half of everything but the gas, phone, water and electric can stay separate as they are about the same.
she then put the gas in my name and took the piss by leaving the heating on etc etc but little did she know was that i changed it back into hers Laughing
then she would leave lights on all over the house so when i returned from work i would have all the gas rings on the cooker going for 4 hours before she got bacl lol.

not saying your going to split but be prepared Thumbs Up

my current outgoings are
£115 month council tax
£70 month gas and electric
£695 month rent
£36 month sky BB, phone and tv,
£11 month bt line
£40 month water
£? food
£100 month diesel/petrol
£75 month vehicle insurances (car, van, bike)
£35 month vehicle tax
+ anything else i cant remember Confused

Yup, I will defo second this statement.
Then whatever you have left in your own account is yours to spend as you want, when you want.

£900 a week from 2 jobs Shocked

I'm looking too although thinking of sharing a house with another couple, we can get a nice 3 bed house with garage for £800, split between 4 it should be ok.

Otherwise looking at about £500 for anything half decent down here Rolling Eyes

I was planning to budget £400-500 each a month to cover all bills, hoping its enough, at the moment pay £300 between us living with parents, but we buy our own food etc.
Problem for me is i don't earn a great deal, about £1060 take home before overtime/freelancing and pay out about £300 in personal bills (loan/insurance(extortionate)/mobile/internet/kickboxing)

At the moment managing to find about £800 a month to pay off a few things like xmas presents, a car (+ more insurance) and a holiday, once thats all outa the way i don't see why i couldn't live off that?

First thing to remember about renting is that you will need a deposit, which is usually going to be equivalent to a month's rent, and then your first month's rent, and most landlords or letting agencies will expect you to pay this upfront. Some letting agencies also charge a "registration fee" which i think is diabiolical but isn't illegal apparently.

So you need about the equivalent of 2 months rent in cash before you even start, have you got that saved yet?

Bills I would say you're probably looking at £100/month for council tax and water, £50-£100 for gas/electric depending on the size of the place and your appliance use, maybe £20-30 per month for household insurance, that plus your rent covers the basics and anything else is a luxury not a necessity!

I think you can do that easily, I used to have a big flat of my own and live comfortably on about £800-900 a month.

Obviously you have to be a bit more careful with your cash but splitting 50/50 you will be OK.
