I'm thinking of buying one of these: Gadget.

I can't justify the £3000+ for the Poweplate one they reviewed on the gadget show a while back.

There is also a slightly cheaper one: Cheaper gadget.

Has anyone used either? Do they work?

I'll still do swimming for a cardio workout but could do with a bit of muscle toning Smile

I don't think there's any doubt that the expensive models work - they're installed in lots of gyms and football clubs etc. nowadays.

The cheap ones are smaller, and less heavy duty but still get good reviews from what I can see and its pocket money prices so certainly no worse than lots of the stuff I've bought and never used if it doesn't perform as hoped.

If I had the space, the money, the enthusiasm, I'd opt for a cross trainer. That thing looks a bit weird.

I've tried a cross trainer and have a treadmill.

I find them boring though and don't stick with them. This thing is only a few minutes a day.

If it was as easy as standing on a vibrating plate then no one would be fat!!

Gimmick. Put some effort in.

I wasn't asking whether I should put effort in - I do that with swimming thanks.

I was after opinions of anyone who's actually used one.

We have one in our home gym. It never gets used. Make of that what you will Smile

Evidence that no matter how bad the 'credit crunch' gets, people will still by expensive, pointless crap.

Surely everything it does can be achieved with use of your brain and some household items, and a little effort.

I personally think that using the bottom step of your staircase to do a few minutes step ups a day would be far more beneficial than standing on a vibrator.

Just because they have them in gyms does not mean they do anything useful. I reckon its just a novelty gimick like 'motorcise'. Its for people who want to feel like they have done some exercise without actually having done some exercise.

Well 1. Its not expensive and 2. I don't know yet if it's crap.

I don't know what household items you have in mind but i'd rather use something designed for the job than cobble something together out of... well I don't know what out of Smile

So far one negative comment from someone who's actually used one.

I saw that episode of the gadget show, and the powerplate definately worked.

But they also said that the Wii fit had almost as much benefit for about 5% of the cost.

And they both did 40 mins of excercise a day, which is going to have a benefit whether or not you use a fancy gadget.

The Wii fit is £69 compared to just over £100 for the cheaper of the two I mentioned and I believe it was 15 mins a day 3 days a week on the powerplate.

I'm not saying you should get a Wii fit, I'm saying that a £3000 piece of equipment didn't give much more benefit than a (at the time) £150 bit of equipment. And it was likely that just being forced into an excersise regime for the test period was enough to increase the presenters fitness.

Plus, if russian astronauts and Madonna use the Powerplate... why aren't they using something that does the same and costs £100? I'm a bit concerned that you'd be the type to buy into the whole 'lateral thigh trainer' infomercial stuff... No one actually knows if these devices follow exactly the same principle as the powerplate, or if they give you any benefit at all!

Personally I'd not bother and I'd get a gym membership or I'd go running/cycling or I'd buy some weights. Much cheaper and you're more likely to get the benefit. I'm concerned that one of those machines would end up in a corner of the house totally unused. At least with a gym membership you can feel guilty about not using it!

He's not talking about getting a £3000 bit of equipment, but a £130 bit of equipment, so it would be cheaper than a wii or a year of gymn membership.

I still think doing step-ups would be better though.

I do have a membership at the swimming pool so I do get regular exercise of the putting effort in kind Smile Gym type exercise bores me very quickly and I never persevere with it.

I expect I'll not persevere with this unless it does do as it says on the tin in which case only £100ish spent.

I don't expect it to be as good as the powerplate but it has had positive reviews so am willing to give it a go.

I don't buy into infomercials. The only device of this type i've seen on tv was the powerplate on the gadget show and that was far too expensive anyway.

They have introduced the Vibrogym at my local gym this year and I bought a block of sessions earlier in the Spring. I was told by the PT that the best way to benefit was to do some cardio first then use the plate, so use after swimming. I found it great and it definitely made a difference to my muscle tone.

Just a word of caution though. The models that were installed at the gym didn't fair very well and within a couple of weeks 2 had broken. They replaced them with very robust professional ones. Given this is a public gym I think it's probably stating the obvious. So, before you invest make sure that you have some recourse if it breaks, else it's not as cheap as you think!

Yes I know that Colin, but £300 a year on Gym membership is still better value if you use it than a £100 device that you never use...

Obviously, but a device sitting in the corner doesn't induce gym guilt.

And I can't do the step thing, cos I don't have any stairs! Wink

You can't 'Tone' a muscle, only lose the fat surrounding it, you can't spot reduce fat either. God knows how they get away with selling that tat.

Stolen

2 – Do those ‘Ab Belt’ gizmos really work?

No. If you have an injury then a small electrical impulse may help prevent muscle wastage but they will not give a healthy individual rock hard abs or bulging biceps. Again it takes a healthy diet and some solid strength training to force the human body to change.

It's the same thing pretty much.

Will let you know if its any use or just a dust collector.

Maybe you'll find the same with this new gadget (but only find out after you've bought it).

If I had a cross trainer, I would stick in front of the tv, and make myself use it during certain programmes. Cool
