I am selling a lap top on gum tree and had a lot of replys. (mates lap top not mine) anyway got a reply from a few. One said he needed it asap then asked the model number so I gave it to him and he replied like this.

Quote:
thanks a lot for your reply..due to me being busy at the moment, i wont be available to view the item at the moment. i want it posted to my son in Nigeria.......i want to make it as a gift for him for his birthday that's comin up in a few weeks. i havent really had enough time to spend with him due to work and he doesnt even take me as is dad anymore.........i'm trying my best but he wont understand that. i really need you to help me post it to him and i'll be paying for registered postage using parcelforce or at the post office n dont really mind the cost of postage......i will pay for the item with the price stated as i need to do this asap since i'm travelling to asia on saturday for a conference and i will also pay for the postage. i will be paying you with paypal....

Looks like a load of ballocks to me. So need a good reply apart from laughing here. Or do you think he is genuine . I have heard of this happening before.

Steer clear. It contains the word "Nigeria".

Probably a stolen paypal account and when you post it, paypal will realise and take the money off you. Thus no laptop and no money.

I had a similar situation when i sold a phone on ebay. The paypal account was linked to the ebay account so all seemed well but it turned out it he was using a stolen credit card through paypal. Fortunatley he tried paying to my dads paypal and not mine so my dad noticed that something wasn't right, i think he contacted paypal and they pwnt him. So i had no money, but i still had the phone Very Happy

Tried advertising the laptop on here? There are a lot of uni students on here so i'm sure one of them could do with a laptop to free up some space that a desktop uses up.

Indeed, I need a smart answer for reply. Very Happy

That is in no way legit to me.

I am in Northern Ireland Matt cant be arsed with postage of it. If it sells it sells person who owns it is in no hurry but I get a few quid out of it. Not in any hurry myself.

Out of the 30 million nigerians or whatever there are, so about 4 of them have enough money for a sack of spuds. Maybe 1 out of them 4 is genuine Laughing

So you have more chance of winning the jackpot on saturday than getting a genuine nigerian on gumtree Laughing Laughing Laughing

God they're getting The Sob Story in much quicker than they used to these days LOL ... I'm loving how straight off he's telling you his life history: "he doesn't even take me as is (sic) dad anymore."

Strange how these Nigerians are suddenly dropping their aitches just like proper Hinglish people now.

Next they'll be saying things like ...
"he doesnt even treat me like hes' dad anymore"

... which I notice is the latest grammatical trend amongst illiterate types of all ages, creeds and races.

Its His YOU GRAMMATICALLY INCOMPETENT KNOBSTICKS (and not just Nigerians) ... not hes', hes or even he's

Grrrrrrr.

Winner, ghastly man.

He was loathsome when he was fat, and he's loathsome and haggard now that he is "thin".

Just send Mr Learnan the following:

Dear Mr Buzz

Thank you so much for offering to pay for my laptop, I am happy to have your efficient confirmation of a legally binding contract so soon. Please let me know the address to send it to, so that when you have paid me I can forward it to your son. I don't have a Paypal account by you can send it to me by Western Union, Mr Bzuz.

Conveniently, I am also travelling to Asia for a conference shortly, perhaps you would like to pick it up from me and then you can pay me in cash - so much easier. Wouldn't it be exciting if we were going to the same conference? What is your conference about? I am attending a conference in New Delhi at the Mumbai Hilton entitled Meticulous and Canny Methods of Investment of Oil Profits in Troubled Financial Arenas, at which I have been asked to be the Key Speaker. I am very excited about that.

As you can see, we all have such troubled lives, yours with your poor unhappy son, and mine with how to dispose of all this cash I seem to have accumulated during the recent oil price rise. Oh my dear Mr Burz, I am so happy that you can help me in my efforts to dispose of such trappings of wealth so that people think I am "normal" like everybody else. I feel I must fall in love with a man such as you one day. I look forward to meeting with you this Saturday at the Mumbai Hilton, look out for me in the dining room, I shall be the one wearing the purple and orange dress with the large hibiscus print, and a red rose tucked behind my luscious blonde tresses.

With much love
Ms D Ragon-Fly

With varying levels of success.

Just tell him you do not do trading with con men and that you will be forwarding these details to eBay.

Chances are that you would get conveniently mugged were you to go and meet him.

ok I am not going to Asia to meet him and he has no time to meet me for exchanging cash in this country apparently. its nothing to do with ebay its gumtree. And we are leading him on. Do catch up Laughing

so need an answer for his boring answer he just gave me. Disapponted in his answer as his first one was so interesting. Maybe they have a scrpt and have no answer after that.

My bad, didn't click it was gumtree. And i know your not traveling to Asia to meet him was just saying that would likely be what would happen.

Problem you've got is if you make arrangements with him, he could then complain through gumtree that you failed to hold up your end of the bargain, though sending him somewhere completely random would be funny.

Ms Ragon-Fly

Find a place in India using google earth or some other maps and find a specific, well known place, set a date and time. Then the day after the agreed date, ask why he never showed up. Thumbs Up Very Happy

Thinking

He sounds a bit too sharp to be dumb enough to go to India.
Seems like a very quick turnaround of messages, bit too professional if you ask me, and he didnt fall for your flowery love-chat.

Still, try it and see.
You never know.
Try suggesting that you have a stopover in London on the way to New Delhi/Mumbai and see if he jumps more quickly at the chance of meeting up with you...

Add a bit more flowery sweet chit chat.

Try for this:

My dear Mr Nathaniel* Burr
How happy I would be to meet up with you and exchange the laptop for some cash.

I have recently realised that my flight attends at London for a short stopover during Saturday, and I am hoping that you will not have already flown away to India at that time?

Perhaps we can meet on connecting flights at the airport. I would so like to meet and exchange computer, cash and vital statistics about our personal dilemmas with you, my friendly Mr Bruz. If only we can connect our flights, I would be happy to swap my flight to one which is the same as yours so that we can chat about our dilemmas together and perhaps resolve the ills of our domestic situations as one heart and mind.

My flight arrives at Healthrow* at [insert a real time and flight number] - I would be so happy to see you. Please let me know if this is possible.

With best wishes and happy divergences
Miss D Ragon to the F to the L to the Y

* you have to change their name to see if they notice that you have changed it, means they are not paying attention to what you are doing, and have their eye on the main prize (your money/personal details)

**leave it typed as "Healthrow", don't change anything! If they are based in London they may pick it up, but if they are really in Nigeria, they probably won't.

That's the best part about it.
Even if you get no response, the fact that you have nothing better to do with your time, and yet have taken time out from doing nothing to waste THEIR time - and maybe even given them a little bit of a hard-on thinking that they will get money out of you, is mildly satisfying.

Not much, but mildly.

If you get a major big positive response and stupid declarations of adoration, or (even better) a photo of them standing at the airport (any airport: London/Lagos/Harare/Bumsecks North Dakota, it doesnt matter where) with a sign with your name on it, waiting for you ... then its definitely worth it.
