Well i always thought i was paying a hefty price to insure my rsvr at the age of 23 with 0 ncb and only tpft cover.

Ive decided as much as i don't really want to, to get a small run about to get some road experience in, the fact i want to try for the police means my driving skill needs to be good in a car so i have a hope in hell of passing pursuit/response training.

I'm not spending money on anything nice as frankly i can not afford it and i wont be using it all to often so would just be wasted. So i was looking at about £500 on a old 98 ish model Astra 1.6 to insure 3rd party only and just basically get comfortable with driving a car and learn to double clutch etc.

Before anyone asks i do have a full driving license for a car as well as a bike. So im 23, new to car driving so no previous claims, 0ncb, no experience and no convictions etc at all. 3rd party only cover for a car worth £500 quid. Stick it all into confused.com and the cheapest quote i get is £1560 Shocked

How can they charge that much for a car that probably would just hit a 100mph and has a 0-60 time slower than it takes to boil a kettle but i can insure a 2001 RSV Mille R TPFT with 2 write off's and a theft in last 3 years for only £760. To me at least it seems completely out of perspective.

Becuase you are liable for up to 4 passengers. You have a vehicle that is likely to do more damage to a pedestrian.

Tried a similar car maybe 2-4 years newer? When i was fannying around with quotes i got cheaper quotes going for slightly newer cars. Also a lot of 5 doors happened to be cheaper than 3 doors.

I also got a quote for a brand new 12k clio 1.2 3 door (with 1 legged gearbox, so probably about 11k for a manual) and the quote came back as £3000 FC which i didn't think was to bad considering i have 2 fault accidents against me (on the bike) and no previous experience in a car.

Will probably go for something like a new shape corsa (the first of the c'mon cars) when i pass, learning in a c'mon corsa and i love it. Hopefully will of passed my test in the week commencing 15th december (Thats when the instructor wants me to book my test if i pass my theory on next wednesday) Smile

Why do you need to double-clutch in a 1.6 Astra?

Surely it's only gearboxes without synchromeshes that you need to double-clutch.

On the insurance thing, I've noticed that Saloon cars seem cheaper once you get past 20. Tried a Vectra instead of an Astra?

Ive been advised you need to be able to do it for response training, so something i need to practice.

Matthirst i do not believe claims on bike insurance count on car insurance. Problem is i don't want anything nice, only something cheap with years tax and mot, also i don't want to pay more than i am for the car on insurance.

As it seems at the moment the only way i can possibly do this is look at getting something like a 1.2 corsa and insuring it under my dads insurance with me as named driver. If i had the money i would love something like a focus st but seeing the insurance for cars so much older and less powered than that i doubt i could ever afford insurance on a newish ST.

You could always try going for something older and get a quote from a specialist in classic cars.

I think you'll find that claiming on a bike policy also affects a car policy however most insurers dont recognise bike NCB so they kind of have you over a barrel unfortunately.

Just been speaking to a few people at my work and they seem to think it depends on the company, though to be honest as they don't accept your NCB's they really shouldn't ask about bike claims.

Might just get put down as named driver on my dads or mums insurance to begin with. Once im over 25 insurance will be cheaper and i will be able to say i have a few years experience by then.

Im in the same position as you SR, I have a cheap run about which costs me 700 quid to insure 3rd party. and a ZXR 400 which costs 650.

You do als have to tell car insurers about any bike claims, as they ask for any motoring claims or something. Its a con how they will take anything into account to raise the qoute, but are picky when it comes to things that could lower it, EG NCB

Where did you hear you had to double clutch for the police btw?

Speaking to a police officer about the pursuit and response training, they told me that they needed to be able to do it as part of the course.

Quite a few people have told me though that you don't need to double clutch modern cars.

I think with 3 claims on my bike i will be best going through parents insurance untill some of the claims are gone from my history. Is it 3 or 5 years you have to quote them for?

That is illegal btw, it's called fronting Sad

Try some older big engined cars, I've managed to get a quote for £1000 on a 2.0 Celica, and it's one of the cheapest I've got.

Can be regarded as insurance fraud.

Fronting.

seems to be a mix up. My mum offered this to me before, she needs a run about car of her own and said if I pay for the car only a cheap one max 500 then she would pay for my name to go on her insurance so I can use. Reason she offered this is because I would not get a car as it would sit unused. She will own it and use it 70% of the time but I was kinda hoping I could afford to get my own one but with the cost of insurance I can't see it happening. it's anoying if I do it this way as she works 12 hour shifts so I won't get much experience but I suppose it's going to be better than nothing.

Now though I could do with a car of my own but unless I can get insurance to under £500 I can't see it happening. Is there much of a drop in rates when you hit 25 even if it's still the first car you've insured?

It is fronting if you are in reality driving the car all the time and it is just insured in your parents' name.

However, if you are occasionally driving your mum's car and not the main driver, then it should be ok.

A little general advice on car insurance.

1. Putting your mum on as a named (secondary) driver will knock a chunk off your premium - 30% drop wouldn't be unreasonable.
2. Look at unusual cars for your demographic. Police in the last few years have liked vauxhall omegas, assorted volvos, and the general hatchback tat. Don't be surprised if a large saloon is significantly cheaper to insure than a small hatchback.
3. I don't know why, but I always found astras to be surprisingly expensive. Try a quote for a similar escort and expect a 20% drop.
4. Try lots of companies. I generally have little luck with confused, but swiftcover say they will beat any quote on adverts.
5. Few companies accept bike no claims, and you may find that one company will give you a better quote with zero NCB than another company will with 5 bike NCB.
6. If you do use your bike NCB for your car, you then won't have any bike NCB to play with. Annoying if you want to get a quick bike after a bit of time in a car.
