What is it that makes "cold" tyres dangerous?

When is a tyre ever "warm" or "hot" straight away anyway?

I always hear about it on here.

Rubber is more sticky when it is warm

Touch your tyre before you go for a decent distance ride (few miles)
Touch it when you get back

Warmer


A warmer tyre will stick to the road a lot better, so better grip on the road.

Yeh, try wheelying on cold tyres, my Racetecs dont like to be wheelied in the wet or cold. Bike gets all kinds of outta shape. Laughing

Cold tyres suck...
The other day going to school I was a block away from where I live, so the tyres were ice. A taxi driver pulled out a bit on me, and I got scared and twitched on the front brake. The front instantly gave out and if felt like my front wheel was gonna touch my right ear!
Somehow I managed to save it with a bit of pain to my ankle when I pushed off, but still, not a nice feeling.

A tyre is never warm or hot unless you have tyre warmers. Wink

Cold tyres are less sticky than warm ones. If you feel a cold tyre feel how hard the rubber is. If you then feel a warm tyre you'll feel how much softer the tyre has become. The softness allows it to get pushed into all the tiny indents on the road more easily and thus generate more grip.

Or after some hard riding (generally on track for me).

On the track; track tyres can be seen to be physically sticky when you come back in; press your thumb against the tyre and pull it away very slowly... you can see and feel the skin actually actively sticking to the tyre.

my tyres post ride like to remove my garage floor paint.

they don't do that pre-ride.

Sorry, I meant without being ridden. Doh! Doh!

Yeah, they get warm after being ridden on track, although most road based tyres will get warm enough for most people)knee down etc.) with just normal riding.
