I regularly visit my local arm of the Grand Union Canal (Apsley Mill to Winkwell) to indulge in my favourite pastime of predator fishing - i catch Pike, Perch and Chub on lures, spinners, flies etc.
Through my own observations and conversations with other anglers, boat owners, dog walkers etc i've noticed that there have been an unusually large amount of Eastern Europeans fishing on the canal over the last few months.

Now, it may just be a coincidence, but suddenly all the larger fish (especially the Pike) seem to have disappeared.

There's been a lot of press recently (and even a court case) about Eastern Europeans poaching and cruelly decimating fish stocks with fixed lines, gill nets etc.

Am i being too suspicious, or do you think it's worth reporting my concerns to the Angling association (who hold the fishing rights), or to the EA or similar??

quite possibly would be worth reporting it,

we had some eastern european gypsies set up camp near one of our local club waters, they emptied the place of all the carp, pike and big bream, the srtung nets across the pools and waited overnight then nicked all the fish. we reported it and all that happened was the gypos were moved on by the constabulary, leaving the club members to raise money to buy more fish stock.

oh yeah, the gypos also killed and ate the 2 families of swams on the pools and the coppers did sod all.

For a while now, there's been what looks like a small shanty encampment along the Brixworth bypass, next to Pitsford reservoir. Wouldn't be surprised if it was them shitting in the water that caused the cryptosporidium outbreak in June.

I used to live on a narrowboat on the grand union, but closer to London. We'd see them fairly often, but a lot of the time they would dissappear into the bushes. They must have thought I would be bothered to do something about it. It could be a problem in the future.

Im a pike fisherman too, out local canal has been fished pretty much dry of big pike by our polish invaders.

One nasty piece of work in paticular uses goldfish as live bait. He has been prosecuted twice for no license but just goes straight back to it. He has also assaulted a bailf.

Mmm, that's something i do take issue with - the whole moral/ethical question of livebaiting aside, using 'foreign' lives is an irresponsible and frankly dangerous practice.
There is loads of talk at the moment of KVH destroying carp stocks, a problem clearly caused by the introduction of foreign species. Again, look at the destruction of our native crayfish by the signal crays from America.
If you must livebait, please only use fish that you have caught at that water that day. The same goes for deadbaits: please just use locally caught fresh deadbait, or frozen seabaits.

Thumbs Up

Report it, I recently watched a group of Eastern Europeans catch two large Pikes from a local canal then bash them against a concrete wall to kill them (although they were still flopping around a good 10 minutes after, which is shocking) so that they could take them home a eat them.

Sorry to dredge up an old-ish thread, but thought i would update it:
At the weekend i had my rod licence checked (for the first time in ever!)by an EA representative, upon chatting to him for a while it transpired that they had been finding large numbers of tethered lines all along the canal - he remarked that he had found 30 in a short pound between 2 locks just the other day.
So, it seems my suspicions are/were correct and there is a fair bit of poaching going on - having said that, the EA guy told me that (on 'open' waters)you can legally take up to 2 fish of each species, provided that they are caught on a rod and line, so it's more the people setting fixed lines & nets that they are after.
Carry on the good work Mr EA rep man!

Thumbs Up

It's free for kids aged under 12, and it's only £5 a year for 12-16 years old. My eldest lad is 10, so he still qualifies for free - he had a nice little 7lb jack on Sunday, caught on a small spinner.

Thumbs Up
