Suppose Bill is a healthy man without family or loved ones. Would it be OK painlessly to kill him if his organs would save five people, one of whom needs a heart, another a kidney, and so on? If not, why not?

Consider another case: you and six others are kidnapped, and the kidnapper somehow persuades you that if you shoot dead one of the other hostages, he will set the remaining five free, whereas if you do not, he will shoot all six. (Either way, he'll release you.)

If in this case you should kill one to save five, why not in the previous, organs case? If in this case too you have qualms, consider yet another: you're in the cab of a runaway tram and see five people tied to the track ahead. You have the option of sending the tram on to the track forking off to the left, on which only one person is tied. Surely you should send the tram left, killing one to save five.

But then why not kill Bill?

Question is: Are those that are to be killed chavs or fucked up teenage bikers? If so I say yes go ahead and don't just kill them but torture them to death and in the case of chavs, do it very slowly Twisted Evil

Make sure the organs you use are not the brain because there will be nohing there, and not the liver because it will be totally fucked up with alcohol and drugs. Not the lungs because it will be nothing but shit from what they smoke and certainly not the heart because they have none.

It means basically that they have no organs that can be of use to humanity. Just kill the bastards and free some air for the rest of us to breath

Twisted Evil

Anyone who disagrees with this should also be killed to free up resources for me

Joe, you are so misinformed.

Bill is dead, I'm afraid to say.

It was teh five point palm heart exploding technique what did him in.

Depends if the others are going to die anyway. Although I suspect in this case you will say that they are.

In the situations you've mentioned it's a choice you have to make. There is no way out of it. However in the real world free from such anicdotes I don't think anyone has the right to decide who lives and who dies.

In the god delusion Dawkins discusses this.

Apparently most people choose to send a runaway train down the track with 1 person over 5, thus being responsible for the ones death inadvertently but saving 5.

However, if there was a /really/ fat guy on a bridge, with a train going underneath it heading for 5 people, most people wouldn't push him off to stop the train (despite the same maths).

It's because you'd then have a hand in their death. As a forced choice between numbers where someone /always/ dies then it is easy. But the moment you actually boil it down to just numbers (5 organs from one man) and have to say 'we're killing you to save x amount' then it becomes innately unethical.

That said, an opt-in system of 'we give you 10k this year, enjoy life and then turn up next year for your 'use'' could be good (if we could find the buggers).

But this /whole/ system could be so easily avoided if we just changed the organ donor law to opt-out. Simple. Would mean infinitely more childrens organs (yes they can and do need to sign up) and very short waits. Lets think, in this secular age who the fuck is actually so selfish as to want their shit when they're buried.

Cheers Bonny.

A big fat +1 from me.

What has Bill done wrong that he shouldn't be allowed to continue to live? If 5 people need organs, why don't you commit suicide and let him have yours? Just because he has no family, doesn't mean he wouldn't be missed or that his contribution to society isn't important; Bill could be the future inventor of some infinitely renewable, cheap energy source.

On the other hand, he might be a convicted serial kiddie fiddling rapist and murderer. In that case, I think he deserves to die (and have his innards distributed to wherever they're needed), but as an average citizen, he has as much right to life as the 5 people who need his organs.

If you take it to its logical conclusion though, why try to save the 5 people? The planet is overpopulated; it's for the "greater good" that that some excess is trimmed.

How about breeding people for organ transplant use then? Thats extrapolating your argument to its natural conclusion.

Chavs come to mind Twisted Evil

Breeding chavs, even just for organ transplantation purposes, is extremely antisocial behaviour.

What about if the one person on the track is twenty years old and the five on the other track are all in their seventies?

Logic vs empathy vs compassion...

Well, that wasn't quite the point really, considering the organs out of bodies squished on a track by a train wouldn't be worth a w@nk anyway. I was thinking more along the lines of lives already lived vs one that's hardly had a fair go.

How about if the one were a child vs five twenty year olds?

I'd go along with a National Lottery Death Number; you win a million quid, but you've only got a month to spend it before being (humanely) harvested...
