Failed - Advice?

Hey hey,

Been reading up on here for a while, loads of good advice so I thought I'd ask for a little more.

Just finished my DAS course in Nottingham - failed. Just came off a mini-roundabout and there's a zebra crossing, didn't see the guy waiting at the side of the road and went straight over it. Gutted. And there are no more dates at the test centre I'm at. Boo! (Although if anyone wants the details of s brilliant instructor in Nottingham, let me know - Dave at ASM is a legend!)

Worse than that, I move to Manchester in the middle of August.

Now, I'm not really arsed about this new test, I've seen the layout today at the test centre (it's a new one - very posh) and, to be honest, I think it looks fun However, I do have a few questions...

1) Not going to get a test booked here in before I move, so can anyone tell me if there are any test centres with easy routes in Manchester, or are they all about the same?

2) Anyone want to PM me the details of some recommended riding schools in the Manchester area? Especially any who'd be willing to take a wally like me on for a few lessons before a big test. (I'll be living in Eccles).

3) New test query - after doing all of the off road stuff, do you still have to do a U turn and an emergancy stop on your test?

4) I've loved my DAS course. I'm tempted to get a 125 to rattle around on for a while just because I've had so much fun. Anyone think this would be a problem having ridden a 500cc for 4 days solid? Is it going to make me a better rider? Or is it going to be a problem when I go back to a 500?

Hi,

I can't really comment on the first three questions you had, but I can offer my opinion and experience on the fourth.

I did my DAS back in April, rode a 500cc bike for a week solid, passed my test and had to ride a 125cc from the test centre to the bike school (because of bike/pupil swaps etc). I kept stalling because you have to work the clutches so much more on 125's. I found it really unnatural and much harder work than the 500.

3. You wont have to do the emergency stop on the road. I am not sure about the u-turn. I would say not, as the new test says:

Emergency stop and U-turn will both be done offroad in the new test. More details here about the new test https://www.riverviewrt.com/layout-of-test.html I think getting a 125cc is a good idea just so you can keep riding regularly and get more practice and experience on the road, the 500cc I rode during my training/test was so much easier to ride than my 125cc. I beleive if you can become a competant rider on a 125cc you won't have any problems going back to a 500cc.

I've just booked my training and test with MSM training (google it ).

Not sure how they are but I did my assessment and they seemed friendly enough.

I was talking to the guy that assessed me and he said they may be building a temporary test centre in Manchester but if not you will have to take the test in St Helens or Rotherham.

Sorry it's taken so long to reply, guys, I've been busy with the move and stuff. Just wanted to say thanks for the advice, much appreciated.

I ended up getting a CG125 to pootle around on and I'm suprised at how well it rides! On the flat in low wind it hits 65 easy! And thats with me and a top box on it! I even take it accross the Pennines from Manchester to Notts every weekend - be sure to gimme a nod is you see me.

Got another DAS booked with MSM in October, they seem really clued up and friendly, too, so thanks for the tip there.

Nice one. And you do know that the new test has been postponed even further now? They won't be introducing it until March '09 so you have plenty of time.

Passed my DAS no probs on Halloween after over 2500 miles in 3 months rattling around on a CG125. Advice to noobs: get a 125, you learn so much it makes it well worth it.

Got myself a FZ6 now and couldn't be happier. Even sold the car so have been riding rain, snow and shine... Still loving it.

So thanks to all, especially everyone at MSM and ASM one happy biker here!

Bad luck on not passing your DAS.

I was talking to my examiner (passed my DAS last Wednesday) and she says that the new test includes both the emrgency stop and the U turn at to be done at the centre.

If you are going to wait so long before re taking then i would get a 125 to make sure you get plenty of bike practice in before your next test, I know its not the same as riding a bigger bike but it'll all help.

if you're north manchester, the bike school wtih the best reputation around here is in Rossendale, it's called Valley Bike School

They are absolutely brilliant, i have my test on friday and i'm 100% confident thanks to these guys
