Does anyone know much about radiators?

Hey my radiator has been making hissing noises the past hour (since the heating came on) they've come in odd bursts and seem to be coming from here;

Is it supposed to be some kind of relief valve to let pressure out? I'm a little paranoid cause the whole system is ancient and I could do without my room being flooded.

Can you see a little grub screw, if so turn it slowly, as soon as you hear the air coming out get ready to turn it back off when the water starts to come out, walah...

No grub screw, there is a screw that I managed to turn until it came out, there was a slight bubbling sound and now I can see what looks like water, does that sound right?

Yeah, turn it off when you see the water, you'll probably hear it knock for a few seconds after, then feel the top of the rad' and it should start getting hot...

Does it mean mine is broken? I could get maintenance to come look at it but I think my landlord may actually kill me, I've already managed to blag a new oven (must have been a few hundred quid) and a boiler (which cost him £1300), so I think it may be inappropriate to ask for more just yet (I've been making up for the ridiculous agency fees).

Either way it is definitely warmer in here, which is good seeing as it was cold enough to make me shiver earlier. Thumbs Up

Could be due to the new boiler then, they had to drain the system before it could be fitted and it could be that they didn't bleed it properly.. as my radiator is the highest point in the building it would explain why I have air in it. Interesting if I'm right.

Common thing
A few in our house do it every 6 months or so,
which stops the top of the rads getting hot at all, we have a bleed key which cost a couple of quid.

remember to check boiler pressure after filling a rad, the pressure may drop so low it will damage the system

That's an AAV (Auto Air Vent) and it should bleed the system on it's own. Give it a few sharp hits with a something semi weighty.
