In this thread, it was mentioned that somewhere between "half" and "nearly all" of us ride illegally.

This isn't about whether you speed or not or park in disabled bays, this is about the legality within the remit of your bike, your licence, insurance, MOT etc. So, if Mr Plod decided to give you a random tug (oooer, missus) would there be something for which he'd have an excuse for assisting you down a flight of stairs?

If you count riding a 49cc for a year de-restricted then yes.

When I'm on a big bike I doubt I'll be 33bhp.

All of my documentation is perfectly in order, hence I have voted no to the 'illegal' question.

My bike however does sport an unmarked Akrapovic can, and an 8x6 number plate, oh and the tax disc is under the seat but I hardly think that makes me a master criminal and doesn't put me in the illegal category as my understanding of the context of this poll.

Not 33bhp
Slash cut exhaust
Small number plate
Leaky fork seals so not roadworthy, I guess.

The only thing they could have me for is not displaying a tax disc. If they are forcing me to buy road tax and want me to display it they can bloody well buy me a holder! I'm strict with myself on insurance but MOT and tax can sometimes get forgotten about for a few weeks/months.

Didn't the claims about half of motorcyclists (or whatever) riding illegally turn out to be bollocks?

CG125 - standard except a pirate flag and useless luggage rack. Think my licence covers use of it. Taxed and insured.

NC30 - currently SORN, but awaiting its MOT. Removable baffles in the exhaust is the only grey area of legality. Standard plates, Tax to be purchased, insured.

CBR600 - stock except for R&Gs and wheel stripes, hardly areas of questionable legality. Standard plates, taxed and insured.

I also carried out my 2 years probation on an old 400/4, with a certificate proving its output was under 33rwbhp. I'm no law obider when no one's looking, there's a time and place to bend the rules (didn't stop me getting 3 points for filtering over a double white line past stationary traffic though - bloody unmarked bikes).

Exhaust - baffle removed
Number plate - 8x6...legal text but a ruler check would catch it
Tax Disc - on my PC desk.
Sidelights - Blue (but maybe OK)

So if someone crashes into and ruins your bike you just end up with a ruined bike and nothing comes of it and then you have insurance purely for getting your own vehicle fixed in the case of an accident?

Also, I wonder the amount of people who have undeclared mods on their insurance and put down "legal".

Having a full (unrestricted) licence and insurance doesn't mean you're properly insured if you didn't declare that new exhaust of yours Wink

I don't think we should include loud exhausts or dark visors in this... I think we're talking about license, tax and insurance.

Totally legal, no mods, no small plate.

Got pulled last night for no headlight, but I know it was working 5 minutes earlier, and when I popped the front off to stick my spare in it was still hot to the touch, so plod were happy.

So legal I even carry spare bulbs Thumbs Up

Ive voted no, but a simple roadside stop check wouldnt reveal that my bikes above the 33bhp limit and i certainly wouldnt be telling them Laughing Infact ive been stopped several times and never even been asked about a restriction, im just counting on not getting pulled by traffic police as i guess they'll know a little more about it.
