as the title says really, i noticed when i first got the bike the chain had no tight spots, but recently it has developed one, tis quite irritating as there is a repetative noise coming from what i presume is the chain, it goes: shh....shh....shh....shh, lol best i can describe a noise in words.

it gets faster and slower with speed variation and is only audiable when coasting or under very light engine breaking, anyone else get this? is it normal?

there's loads of life left according to the indicator on the swingarm,
i do lube it fairly often but probably not often enough(roughly once a fortnight).

if it is down to a seizing link can it be resolved with full degrease and fresh lube?

Find the seizing link and try and manipulate it. However with an O ring chain it is unlikely that oiling it will get any oil into the bit thats seized.

All the best

Once a fortnight isn't nearly often enough to lube a chain. Most tight-spots are caused by poor lubrication.

I've had a couple of chains that looked really bad, tight spots all over the place but a good scrub with a tooth brush and paraffin brought them back really well.

well, got it all cleaned to look like new, manipulated the 8 or so really stiff links using wd40 and engine oil but to no avail so it looks like new chain/sprockets time, shame really as both chain and sprockets look really good visually Rolling Eyes

next time, take better care of your chain and sprockets - it really does pay off!

mine get a full clean every week, and then re-lubed. remember your chain needs relubing after you have ridden in the wet, so taking care of you chain is vital in the winter!

also you should check and if needed adjust your chain tension every 600 miles. it is easier for me to do it every other week after a good clean.

do you know the proper way to lube a chain?

i did'nt know there was a wrong way Confused i either chuck gear oil at it or spray it to death with chain wax, both resulting in spirographed rear wheel/ tyre lol

you dont need to drown the chain in lube. youn only need to apply chain lube in between the outer and inner plates of the chain, where the o-rings are. you dont need to lubricate the back of the sprocket or where it meets with the chain. its just a waste of lube! and try not to get it all over your wheel or tyre, obviously.

look at the pic below. you can see the o rings sitting in between the outer and inner plates. these are what need lubing.

oh and PJ1 blue label is the best lube to use, avaoid castrol, it just makes a messy grinding paste, causing your chain to wear at an accelerated pace. also the dry chain lube is crap, avoid it.

Here's a new lesson for you - get yourself one of these

A simple, cheap but definitely effective chain oiler

I got one fitted the other day - a whole lot simpler than a scottloiler or a loobman and i've got to say that it works - if you keep forgetting to lube your chain or do long journeys, it's definitely worth it. Beats me having to lube my chain every 100 miles and adjusting every 300-400 miles.

I'll show you how it's fitted to my bike.

So, for 12 quid, i thought it was a very good investment - i now find my chain adequately lubricated after during and after every ride! Obviously, don't get complacent with cleaning the chain every week or two.. but it at least ensures that your chain is lubed especially in wet winters.

It's gravity fed, and the flow is adjusted by flow control valve. You can make your own kit, but for 12 quid and common sense, it takes a lot of the hassle away.

I use 20W50 oil from wilkos, only a quid for a litre like so it's a whole lot cheaper than chain lube!

I was just about to think that, but i've found that the oil has liberally coated both sides of the chain. 20W50 is a bit light so it's less viscous. Original scottoilers only had single side applicators. Suffice to say, it does the job - I made sure that i placed the applicator along the width of the chain so it'll distribute oil across a wider area. For 12 quid, i aint complaining since it's usually the cost of a single can of chain lube and chain cleaner for me (WURTH).

I'm not sure how easy it will be to fit, you just have to be intuitive with the routing and dispenser needle. You could mount the reservoir on the rear subframe and route it down the frame spar in order to drip the oil in a similar position to mine, i.e. in line with the footpegs. Most people route the delivery tube so that the dispenser drips infront of the rear sprocket, but the idea is to have it lubing the O-rings.

Anyway, it comes with a handy syringe to top up your fluids, and depending on what oil you use, flow rate etc, you can let it last one 100-200mile ride out or a whole week's commute depending on conditions.

Problem with where you have directed it is that you are putting the lub on the outside of the chain, just before it goes round a tight bend at speed (ie, around the front sprocket). Most of the lube is likely to be flung off the chain immediatly.

All the best
