That, apparently, was the completely absurd amount that was spent on the incredible opening of the Atlantis Hotel and Resort in Dubai two days ago. Just been chatting to my mum on Skype and decided to youtube it, observe, one of the most incredible fireworks displays I think you'll EVER see Thumbs Up

Bear in mind, the area depicted in the video is also the Palm Island on which the resort was built, my brother went to his friend's house next to the 'trunk' of the palm tree and he said the noise was absolutely deafening, at a guess, it's probably about 3 miles squared.

Dubai is the place to be at the moment, and it's only going to get better.

Wolf, you're right, I've heard about the sewage problem as well but I heard it was cleaned up for a few weeks and now they've started doing it again. I look forward to seeing what the government are actually going to do about it this time as it's potentially something that will completley destroy Dubai's tourist trade.

I would love to go there, but you can't shag on the beach like you can at Blackpool.

If I did own property there and was renting it out I would be worried.
There are more builders there than there are residents and when they leave soon who do you rent to.
Property prices down as much as 40% since September.

Paddy, the whole world is being affected by the credit crunch (god i can't believe I just used that bloody term, i'm sick of it) As for the people who leave your house whilst they've been renting it out, why would that worry you? Dubai's a very popular place so there'll always be people that want to rent out there.

Confused

Still, I now feel the urge to visit Dubai. Just need to avoid ALL drugs for a good week before visiting Embarassed

Do not fancy 4 years in jail for a bit of weed on my shoe.

Why?

My sister thought it when she was there. I work in the construction industry with architects every day and fuck me, the idiots responsible over there must be on some trippy ass drugs when they create those dire buildings. The engineering behind them, to make sure they all work, is incredible, but Jesus, they have no taste (in my opinion). It seems to be all about tacky extravagance and see who can build the silliest, tallest building imaginable.

Having said that, I'll more than likely exploit the situation and work there for a bit and earn too much money. Mr. Green I do want to 'experience' it. Smile I can understand you being defensive.

Laughing Fair point Insti, but still, get out there and sample it when you can. I guess most people regard the buildings etc as feats of accomplishment rather than tacky, I personally think they're quite cool but you're right, some of them do look fugly. If you work in the construction industry, I'd get out there, you'll make quite a bit Thumbs Up

There was a bit in the economist recently about how dubai has changed its laws to favour tenants over landlords.

Now a landlord cant sell his property unless the tenant wants to leave and can only increase rent by the rate of inflation. A lot of small investors who bought property that helped get things started, are pretty pissed off.

Bonny, I've been back there quite a few times since I've lived back in the UK and there probably is traces of marijuana in my shoe or jeans or something but I'm yet to be suddenly arrested for it. Yes you'd have to be f*cking insane to actually try and take something but otherwise it's fine, just give all your clothes a good wash before you Laughing

Colin, I think that law was brought in originally to protect the expatriates who live and work over there now and have done for some time. The old laws used to be as such that only UAE Nationals were allowed to own property and everyone else had to rent (usually covered by the employer) but in recent years they'd been abusing that and had started increasing the rates by stupid amounts.

I'll give you an example, our house over there we live in now that we moved into when I was 10 cost my parents (well, my dad's company) 90,000 AED a year. They're now paying 210,000 AED just over 10 years later.
