Well I bought some sweets from the local co-op and they turned out to be almost a year out of date.

Now Im sure if I took them back I would get an exchange or refund but surely I must be entitled to something a bit more substantial. I know with all the additives in them a year out of date probably wont kill me but its still pretty disgusting.

What can I expect?

Should I push for something more when I take them back? Vouchers?

many thanks wr

Is it a 'Use By' or 'Best Before' date?

It is a legal requirement that you cannot sell products past their 'Use By' date (Milk etc always has use by dates)

However 'Best Before' dates are just guidelines and theres noting illegal about them selling the sweets to you. The best you could expect is a refund or a new pack of sweets.

Not too sure, will have a look in a bit. But surely they should have been advertised as out of date or in a ''sale bin''

Most stores should have a policy that they wont sell them out of date (I used to work for WHSmiths and that was their policy.... they gave the out of date stuff to the staff for free instead.)
Thats why you could expect a refund or exchange.

It's likely that some idiot stacking the shelves didnt take the out of date sweets off the shelves first so it's possible no-one knew they were there.

Sweets are packed in a sealed bag and they're full of sugar which is a natural preservative, they're very unlikely to go off in the space of a year.

I recently polished off a tin of golden syrup which was in my Dad's cupboard, (having it on crumpets and pancakes etc). Only when I'd finished the can and washing it out ready for recycling, that I noticed the sell by date...1994.

I wasn't ill, I'm clearly not dead yet...I just think they put on sell by / eat by dates, to make you buy some more!!! Thumbs Up

Most things never used to be dates, if they tasted funny you just wouldn't eat them. What's the worse that can happen.

My dad always says that to me, that things never had a use by date. They only chucked them if they tasted funny Laughing

He's obsessed with buying whoops bread from asda...it goes out of date in about a day Very Happy

Why do you think you're "entitled to something a bit more substantial"?!

Madness... just take them back and get some more sweets. That's what you wanted anyway.

Eat the sweets, take back the pack and say you only noticed at the end.

Two packs. Job done.

As an aside, I just had an egg sandwich and a cup of coffee. The eggs were dated 16th October, and the milk, 5th November. Both tasted fine.
