after a routine oil change i checked the old oil for crap and found an abundance of 'milk choclolate' brown ceramic type chunks, my first thought is clutch... is it a clutch problem? if so what parts need replacing? thanks

Sounds like the stuff used to locate the magnets on the flywheel. Not an early GPZ500 by any chance?

oh sorry forgot to mention its a bandit 4, 1991.... does make a weird sort of grinding/crunching sound if you dump the clutch too quicky with too many revs, kinda like when a car clutch is on its way out.... thanks
