Drive vs Ride: I'd like to settle this.

As Colin says, you can drive something (an animal or vehicle) without actually being in it or on it.

For example a remote control car, you are driving it but not sat in it. A camel you are walking in front of it and guiding it forward then you are technically in control and "driving" it. However if you were sat on the camel and someone was leading it as described, you would be riding it but not driving it.

You have to ride a motorcycle to drive it as you have to sit on it to operate it's controls. So really you're riding and driving at the same time!

A motorcycle is not a vehicle in the accepted sense.

To me a Vehicle is a car, truck, lorry, tank, watever. A motorcycle is just a motorcycle.

Oh yeah, and when you drive an animal you aren't sitting on it, you're standing behind it or you're on another animal (IE a horse).

So if a cowboy drives his cattle to pasture, he doesn't sit on the cows!!

I've always thought that to 'ride' something means that you're not in control of it.

You 'Ride' the bus. You 'Ride' a horse (obviously you have some control, but the horse is still the boss).

You 'Ride' the waves when you're surfing.

From now on, I'm driving my bike. Just to piss everyone off.

No mate that's a straightforward piece of English grammar: you buy something with money and have therefore bought it, if you bring something to work you have brought it.

I reckon you drive a herd of animals either from behind with a whip, or riding alongside on another beast of burden.

A car is always driven, whilst a bike is always ridden.

My missus' pet hate is, similar to and different from, and the fact that no-one seems to use them correctly anymore, like...
