Me, Hollis, Jamie and Ben talked about it briefly on Saturday and me and Hollis had a proper chat on Sunday. Spoke to Charles on Sunday about it and he's up for it. Haven't spoken to Phil or Chris yet, but I'm sure they will come around Wink If not, their loss Laughing

This is the trip idea form going one end to the country and back. And exploring as much of our country as possible. Maybe in a week or more. I'd say two, what with the mileage I'm talking about. Straight through from Land's End to John of Groats it's roughly 860 miles each way. One thing Hollis pointed out to me was that whichever way we’d go first (North to south or south to north) we’d end up coming back on ourselves. Which is why I said One way East and one way West. I also made the start/final route to Land’s End and John of Groats slightly different. Tried to get loads of coast action on the south and we might be able to meet up with some South SE lot and some SW lot.

This is (my) first take on the route.

From Land’s End to John of Groats. Roughly 956 miles Roughly 20 hours - South to North
https://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c282/M0LOT0V/BCF%20Rideouts/SouthtoNorth.jpg

From John of Groats to Land’s End, Penzance. Roughly 1320 miles. Roughly 31 hours - North to South
https://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c282/M0LOT0V/BCF%20Rideouts/NorthtoSouth.jpg

So in total it’s roughly 51 hours and 2300 miles. I’m sure we can bring the 51 hours down though Laughing

Bear in mind this is extremely preliminary and it’s just to open a debate as to the route we take. My idea when I spoke to Hollis was to go from South to North. And on the way up we go on the west side (mainly) and when we go down we go on the east side so we don’t take the same route twice and really explore our wonderfully shitty (some places are nice Mr. Green ) country.

The only place we’d be going over twice would be Edinburgh and Selkirk. My reasons are:

Selkirk: because my granddad lives there in a manor. It’s a quiet little town and I’m sure he’d be more than happy to have a few of us on board for one night going up and one night going down. Not only will it be useful to save money on BnB’s but it also saves the hassle of setting up camp. It’s also a good opportunity to properly freshen ourselves with nice showers, and good food. One pit stop on the way up and another on the way down. Also, when we are on the M6 we get off at a junction that leads to the A7 and if you ask many people who have toured Scotland they will agree that it’s an amazing road. I did the road at night time, near on 9-10pm or so. Dead quiet and while it was fun I didn’t really push it as such because it was hard to see (not confident on the VFR’s lights) and unknown territory on a bike with a shagged shock at night time isn’t the brightest of ideas. Laughing The road was amazing. Selkirk lies ¾ of the way up to Edinburgh. Which leads me to my next point.

Edinburgh: Because there are two amazing roads from/to here. The A7 which I explained in the Selkirk part but also the A68 (and later A696 which leads into Newcastle) and I have to say those two roads, especially when going through Northumberland national park was by far the best roads I have ever been on. A696 was just draw droppingly gorgeous. The corners, and going up and down the hills. We can not miss these roads and I can’t stress that enough. Oh, did I forget to mention the A7 has no speed cameras WHATSOEVER? And the A68/A696 has very very few. I think I saw about 3 or 4? I didn’t see too many po-po either. Think I saw about 3 cars on the 3 roads. And they were all on the A68 close to Edinburgh.

I’m thinking that on the way down (and I spoke to Hollis about this again) we should stop off at Newcastle. For one reason. Proper night out. All of us. Find somewhere decent to park the bikes and somewhere to stay or if some BCF’er is nice enough might lend parking spots in his or her garage. Reason I say night out is because the one night I was there I had a really good time, the girl to guy ratio is in our odds and it’s a good time for all of us to get pissed and depending how FUBARED we are to score with some northern lasses. Wink Unless of course you are otherwise taken. In which case I might just have to point and laugh at you. We will have some good stories with the girlies on our trip and hopefully score some kudos points Wink

And remember lads, this is touring, not racing or a ride out. So no need to willy wave on the speed factor. Although try and keep up on the A696 as I will be putting my best efforts on that road. Very Happy And on the motorway journeys since we are not in a rush and hopefully doing this in a week (maybe more? Depending on everything) so on long motorway journeys stick to a rough 100mph average so as not to get involved with the plod. Thumbs Up

As you can tell, I’m really taking this seriously. It’s 2AM for gods sake Laughing

As always, open to discussion. Thumbs Up Thinking

Good plan.

I PMed Molly back, and suggested that we take in the IOM on the way up since we are nearly going past Liverpool anyway.

Provided we don't go too near TT week it shouldn't be too busy. Thumbs Up

TT course and no speed limits in NSL's, why would you not.

On the motorway speed as long as you aren't the fastest thing out there we should be ok, although since it's going to be 6 bikes in convoy could get pulled by coppers looking for an easy target. I tend to sit at about 80-90 most of the time.....

About July time's best for me by the way since I have races in June and August.

IOM would be quite good providing it's not too expensive for the ferry and that, few people on the forum live there as well.

Motorway speed is usually 75-85 for me, my bike doesn't cruise at 90 very well and it starts to get pretty windy after that.

Well i break up end of June iirc, so middle of June on-wards just to be safe.

We are planning quite early but me and m0l0t0v said the earlier the better so we can all save money up and book time off work. Thumbs Up

Aye, I need to get time off work too. I have a race early June and a race Early August so I think early July would be best. I'll have to take it as unpaid leave though, I've already got loads of holiday. Laughing

75-85's fine by me on the m-way. Always ride at the pace of the slowest rider. Thumbs Up

The ferry to IOM is looking to be about £100-110.

Well im going to the TT for race week other than that i have nothing planned yet... (its going to be an expensive year Laughing )

i like the idea and the route seems good.

to get a ferry to the IOM its fairly expensive

we would also need to sort out some form of breakdown cover, whether its a group or individual?...

Is it JoG just 'because'?

Cos the west coast of 'that north bit' is so many times better than the east coast. Seems silly to go all that way and avoid some of the best roads the UK has to offer.

About £100-110, but IOM looks awesome.

And yeah I was just thinking that. Most insurance companies offer something and AA memebership isn't that much.

O rly?

Where would you suggest as the most Northerny point on the western side?

Durness, probably. You could always head up to JoG and then instead of turning round and going back, head across and down the other side. Or vice versa, of course.

Basically the west side - Ullapool, Torridon, all that 'top left corner' stuff is the dogs danglies. The drag up from Inverness to JoG is alright, but not really all that special in comparison. Whilst I get the 'west side up, east side down' thing of the trip, I'd also say heading over to Aberdeen isn't particularly brilliant either - I'd stick to the west for the Scotland bit and then you can always cut across to come back down the east side of England.

Fair. Thumbs Up

Also what's the target mileage per day? 300 miles achievable?

I'm youtubing some video I took of the 'top corner' back in May, will post it when it's done uploading.

I'd probably cut that mileage down a wee bit for the proper twisty days, last time I was up there was in the car and I was doing about 300/day and that was by myself and more comfy than biking. Call it 200/day to enjoy the twisty stuff, be able to stop and chill now and then (or turn round and do that bit again) and not be stressing about getting where you're going, up it to 300 when you're on the decent main roads. Kinda depends if you're going for pure riding roads or wanna put up with some slower single track stuff and looking at big views.

I tried the whole 'take an interesting route up England' a couple of times, and each time I've regretted it. Now I just burn straight up to Inverness the fastest way possible and use all my days in the fun bit at the top. Cool

As always Bendy you are a star! Thumbs Up

Like I said, the planned route is very very preliminary. I just did a quick (ok, about an hour) test and see what people would say. Reason I did this early was so we could discuss about it and change the route as per ideas (like Bendy's) and have it ready for when we do finally go.

I can do June/July/August. I'm fine with any of it. And the Hornet WILL be ready for that Cool

And remember, the idea is to camp at certain places so we will have to fully loads our bikes Also, I think and oil and oil filter change the day before we go would be a good idea as we would be doing roughly 2k miles. And it'll be less of a hassle to do it before rather than on the trip.

Not exclusive as such. But we were thinking of 18+ only because we want to get some drinking done..

Sad

Also, I think we should visit some known biker spots? Devil's Bridge, etc. Maybe meet up with some other BCF'ers? Thumbs Up

I was intending to do so when I went up to Scotland earlier in the year. But I ended up just blasting up the M6 all the way to Selkirk Laughing

So visiting the IOM is a possible route and it would be good. Good time to take pictures and even better to do some filming! Will be getting this bad boy soon (Graham88 has one and it's awesome) It's the Motorsports HERO Wide version. Look at the top right video. Awesome Thumbs Up Will obviously be fitted to the back of the bike so it can see the rest of you guys Laughing Wink

Any other ideas? More camping or BnB's?

this sounds like it should turn out to be good, what days are we going to do this during the week? a weekend?

I timelapsed it, just had the camera stuck on the roof of the car as a trial run really so it's not an amazing video but gives you an idea what the roads are like up there.

Cheers Bendy Very Happy .

I guess we could go up the west to JoG then back across to the west for a day or two of riding them roads, then cut diagonal across to Newcastle? From there go down the east coast of England etc.

I may be able to do the IOM depends on how much the trip will cost as a whole first, most probably be up for it though as i can save up for then and not going on holiday next year.

Should be a good trip though, i'm probably the slowest rider of the group although if matt's mate with the 250 comes then i'll probs be back with him Laughing . I wouldn't push amazingly hard as i don't know the roads but i'm not a particularly fast rider anyway so suits me fine, can just catch up if you pull over or whatever.

Will be an epic adventure, something i'd never forget. Thumbs Up

Bendy you are an absolute STAR! Thumbs Up The first minute had me sold. I don't care about you guys but I'm going that way! Laughing Box of chocolates for you I think Bendy. I need to otherwise I'll end up eating them Shocked

Yeah was thinking that. But have some BnB's just to freshen up with a nice shower Thumbs Up Or break into someone's house Laughing

Also, I'd say that since we are doing roughly 2k miles or so and aiming to do 200-300 miles a day its gonna turn out t be 10 days or so. Hence why I said 2 weeks max. Maybe just 1 week. Razz

IOM would be awesome and you know it. Just start saving up now! I'd even lend you the money and pay me back later. Thumbs Up

And don't worry about being the slowest rider (that is, until it gets to the IOM and the A696 Wink ) as we will be touring and not racing.

When you want to change the map just click on the link (whichever one) and edit it and then post it up. Thumbs Up That way it's easier to see what you mean Razz

It will be epic. It will be awesome.

We got a bit of time to start saving!

I think I'm spending around 1k on the Hornet and it should be perfect and back on the road. Then I gotta save up for the trip!
