got a clicking from the engine on my nsr125. took it to a local garage and was told it was a piston ring. on the way home i popped into my local parts specialist who said on his 2 stroke bike he had the same thing happened and the little end bearing had gone. since it has stood for 3 years before i got it i'm unsure which it could be. also, as there's no haynes bible for the nsr i don't know how easy it is to replace. i have some mechanical experience, i'm rebuilding my old land rover at the moment so i'm tempted to do it myself but i don't want to be working in the dark. any help/advice? cheers. j

whip the top off the old girl and have alook,
the little end bearing just requires you to pull out a circlip on the side of the piston, push the pin and the bearing and piston will come free of the con rod, (dont drop the bearing into the crank Very Happy)
rings are easy as well, top off then slide the rings off the piston.

not really to difficult.

get head gasket before you do it, just in case you wreck the one thats in there

Hi

Could be either based on the description of clicking (or a few other things). If it is rings then likely it would show up on a compression check.

NSR head gasket cannot be reused.

All the best

might as well replace the new end bearing there about a fiver and if they break say goodbye to your bore , piston and possibly crank

how many miles since the rings were changed ? hte clicking noise could be from a piston ring catching a port but this normally happens in worn rings , if there over 4000 miles old put some new ones on anyway just for good measure

it's only done about 4500 miles, and i doubt the rings have been replaced. there's no obvious loss of power. still shifts like wet proverbial of a damp shovel. it did hit the oil warning light a couple of times but i rode gently until i got home to top it up. wondering if the long time it stood doing nothing dried out the bearings. the previous owner serviced it every year, but that was the only time it was used.
