Hi everyone just wanted to say a big thankyou to all those people who gave me advice and help with my nsr 125.
I changed the sparkplug and fitted a new battery(with help).. and the bike seems fine.However,the chain has been checked but some how seems to of tightened its self up has anyone ever heard of this happerning before????? Confused

Did you adjust the chain on the side stand or some other kind of stand ?

because on the centre stand or an abba stand the 150 or so kilos of weight is not on the back wheel and doesn't compress the suspension meaning the 'slack' isn't right when you do compress the suspension by taking it off the centre stand and sitting on it....

Ok the rear spindle did you leave the chain very slightly unadjusted when you did up the main spindle bolts as this tightens the chain a tad.

Yes. The rear wheel needs to be off the ground or the bikes weight compresses the suspension. The free play stated is with the wheel off the ground

unless that is actually stated in the makers handbook i'd take no notice of the quoted description....

99.9% of bikes have thier final drive chain tension/slack adjusted with both wheels on the floor and generally with a riders weight on them ....

you really want the gearbox sprocket, swingarm pivot and rear wheel spindle to be in a straight line when checking the slack (easier with 2 people), 25-30mm of play/slack in the chain should do nicely when set up like that

Try pushing the bike all the way around the chain checking if it gets looser, could be tightspots in the chain possibly.

Learn something everyday. All the bikes I've had needed to have the rear wheel off the ground. Mind you the newest bike I've owned is 10 years old. Is this a new thing? Confused

No, you must have an obscure bike. The geometry of the swing arm causes a chain to tighten with weight on it with the wheel off the ground. Then you can adjust the chain but then need to check the slack at the (chains tightest point) with the riders weight ideally.

the newest bike i've ever owned was 18 months old (about 1982), all chain drive bikes i've ever had have the chain adjusted in exactly the same way , my present bikes range from a 1973 750 honda to a 1995 gsxr750 sook with several other bikes in between those years...

adjusting the chain with the weight "off" the suspension gives you the risk of it being tight when you are sat on it ...

gearbox sprocket, s/arm spindle and rear wheel spindle should all align in a straight line for optimum chain adjustment

you should really adjust the chain with the wheel off the floor and aim for 20mm - 25mm slack (look at your handbook)
then when it is compressed there should still be a bit of play.
if you adjust it with weight on the bike to the recommended slack then it will be too loose and may come off.
saying that though, most of my bikes hardly compress when taken off the stand so it doesnt really matter.

ok lets look at things this way ...

the swingarm moves in an arc, the pivot point of this arc is the swingarm pivot, which is usually behind the gearbox sprocket ....

now you'll notice that often when your weight is off your bike the chain rides over the slipper and the bottom length of it just hangs between the two sprockets ...

ok now measure the slack on the bottom run, then get someone to sit on the bike and compress your suspension till all points are in a straight line and remeasure the slack on the bottom run ....

if there's no difference then fine, keep doing it the way you do ...

myself i'll do it the way i have for the last 30 plus years with no untoward experience

im not saying nitemares right, but i alway adjust my free play with weight on the wheels,
i'd hate to have an over tightened chain when i hit a pot hole or went over a bump.
