PostPosted: 22:50 - 26 Nov 2008    Post subject: Pain in the back Reply with quote

Ok, so i hurt my back shovelling swarf at work last friday, i spent all weekend resting, laying down etc. I rang my boss on monday who suggested that i get to college, so i did after going to my doctor. My GP told me to take 800mg of ibuprofen every five to six hours. I follow the instructions, and due to me taking these i couldnt work the machines at college, so i sat and did written work. I was feeling drowsy all day.

Anyway, on tuesday, i go to work in pain, told my boss the situation with the medication. He said i should wait for the foreman to come in. So i did, he gave me some "easy on the back" work, which involved greasing teeth while the product was hanging at a decent height. I was getting stiff, and my back was hurting after greasing 7 of these. (about an hour of work) So i asked if i could go home, and i did. I took tuesday and today off, but im worried about taking tomorrow and friday (half day) off incase they think im milking it.

Basically i dont want to fuck my back for life, and even after the ibuprofen, the pain is still there. I dont want my company thinking im taking the piss either...

So do i go to work tomorrow in and firday in pain?
Or take them off and hope my work dont get assy?

I've only been working there 8 months :/

Too late, once you have pulled your back it will always be weak in that area and prone to going now and again.

First thing in the morning get into a hot shower and keep it pointed on your back to heat the area up, find it eases it for me for a few hours if I pull my back.

if your back is still hurting after about 7days you should go back to your Gp and ask to be refered to a neuro- surgen to get it looked at.

i damaged my back in 2005 doing some house repairs and i didnt get it looked at and carried on working and i later found out that i squished the disk between l4-l5 and they had to go in and remove parts of the disk that op was about a 1year and half ago and it didnt work so now ive goto go back in hospital in weeks time to get it operated on again

but i was told by the neuro- surgeon that if i stopped working and got to the hospital sooner than i did they could have fixed the problem before it got to the point of surgery

Start weight training when you're up to it.

I've always had a really weak lower back.. it's gradually getting stronger and stronger since I started on the weights. it still hurts and aches quite often but no where near what it used to and it's a lot stronger too.... still got a long way to go but its improved.

Oh and cod liver oil daily also helps for me I find!

I tore an upper back muscle in August after having some minor back pains at work (which I assume was a minor tear). I was in agony for a couple of weeks but it slowly got better.

I diagnosed myself using Wikipedia, it said it would heal within 4-6 weeks and it did. I started doing chin ups after it, had some minor back pain again so took a break but now it's fine and probably stronger than before (because of the chin ups).

When it happened did you hear a tear and then it was hard to move?

I don't really do any exercies specifically for the lower back so can't really say "just" for lower back.. but I do a full body routine mostly compound exercises like deadlift, squats, bench press etc... most if not all compound exercises utilise back muscles so all of them help strengthen the back.

It took me a while to actually be able to start adding more weight to squats and deadlifts because I was just building my lower back up and scared of hurting myself... but now I'm putting upping the weights with no real worries of my back.. so its working well for me.

Depends on your goals though, I'm weight training to get into shape, not just to fix my back... think you'd struggle with motivation etc to do a full workout if you're just looking to strengthen your back...

maybe better to go see a physiotherapist and get some advice from them?

So just a normal style workout that incorperates the back? Maybe some swimming thrown in aswell. I reckon i could do soft work outs to strengthen my back, and who knows, if it sticks i could further it.

Can you book a physio session through your GP?

I think most exercise would work the lower back to some degree, so yeah maybe just getting active would improve it over time as well.. swimming is non-impact so should be very good for helping injuries improve... (I'm no expert though lol)

I think you can get refered to physio through your GP yes Thumbs Up

Go see him tomorow, you can get signed off too so your company is less likely to think you are taking the piss. Smile

Swimming is a really good exercise for back injuries as it is a non-weight bearing exercise. Hydro-therapy is a very common type of physio for people with back injuries.

Could be worse.. Mate of mine (mid 30's) went to the hospital about back ache, few tests & xrays etc.. verdict: cancer of the spine. Never left the hospital after that first visit & died 5 weeks later....

I can lift silly weights at work but if I am just sitting down and I turn wrong it can just go and I will be in agony for days.

Been at least a year since I had problems with it last time it happened was because I sneezed in the car! Embarassed

Swimming if very good for back pain, concetrate on your core strength and you will be better able to support yourself.

After headbutting a roadsign and landing on the gas cooker in my rucksack seven years ago I've had problems and pain with my back - the only thing that really keeps it painless is proper posture and exercise.
To strengthen your lower back specifically you can do an exercise I was given by a physio:
Lie on your front, with your legs straight and your hands, palms up, by your side.
Slowly and gently lift your legs and arms a couple of inches off the floor, being mindful not to strain your neck (you can always try with a small pillow under your chin). Hold that position and count to ten. Relax, and repeat.

Or there are a number to try here:

Your muscle has been stretched and needs to be tightened up through toning excercises. Doing weights will make no difference. You need to work on core strength through stretching and bodyqeight excrecises only.

Also get someone to take a picture of you standing normally. How good is your posture? Most people have back problems due to poor posture and all the stretching/excercising/medicines in the world wont cure the pain unless you have correct posture.

Edit: Just seen that Annabella has already typed what I have. Embarassed Smile

+1 for the Core Strength exercises Thumbs Up

Most common cause of 'apparently random' lower back pain is poor abdominal strength and as a considerable number of people carry excess weight on their tummies this exacerbates the problem.

I hurt my back badly after a fall from a horse (yeah, I know Embarassed ) and I had to take life pretty gently for the best part of 2 years. Swimming was brilliant for mobility and keeping me sane until I could get back to other stuff.

Take care with the painkillers though, as it doesn't take long for the dosage to ramp up and addictions to kick in. Make sure you keep on at your GP to make sure you're on the road to recovery and support you at work.

Totally agree, i ran out of tramadol on tuesday and i am really struggling. Got some codeine left from before but they don't work half as well. You end up going from 50mg QD to 150mg QD...seriously a pain in the back Laughing

Since i broke my back (stable fracture to T7 and an unstable wedge fracture to T8 which has now collapsed on the side it broke on) my posture has been pants. The neuro surgeon said my spine will be curved more than normal anyway and it will gradually get worse over the years, they can operate if i end up like quasimodo. But if i lay perfectly flat (like today at physio laying on the gym mats) it hurts like a virgin with a black pornstar. Where as in bed i set it to the softest setting (funky ikea slats you see Cool ) so my back just forms to whatever shape it wants because it just squishes into the mattress. I know i shouldn't but i can't sleep enough as it is, nevermind if i'm laying there getting sexually abused by a black pornstar.

I'd love to go to the swimming baths, at physio there is a poster advertising swimming sessions that are run by kirklees (council around here) for disabled or people with mobility/back issues. But the problem is my skingrafts (4 out of the 5) are still a bit dodgey. A lot of dry skin on them and in a few spots they bleed now and again. Don't want to get them infected again (MRSA positive you see Crying or Very sad ) or for them to stop healing/not heal right.

Lifes a bitch but seriously don't go into work just for the sake of it, a small back problem can lead to things a lot worse. A bloke at my work was off for 7 months after a small back pain that he ignored, he is now very limited in his mobility and movement. Not worth it at all, go see your GP and he will probably refer you to a neuro surgeon, if not then probably physio anyway.

Go see an osteo/chiro, then opt for some massage on lower back (specialist sports therapist), then do the exercises Annabella has recommended.

In the meantime, use cold ice packs, or biofreeze or TENS machine to relieve the pressure in your muscles, as they will seize up automatically to protect the pained area. Avoid deep heat!

I use glucosamine & green lipped mussel oil tablets, and usually my back pain is alleviated. Thumbs Up

Oh and in bed, sleeping with a cushion or pillow between your knees helps keep the pelvis aligned and therefore helps the back.

(If I lie on my back, I have the pillow tucked under both knees, when I roll on the side, between the knees.)
