Im 17 on saturday and got my first driving lesson on my birthday.

Bassically i need a car to learn in, but due to everycar in my house being too powerful, the insurance will be a joke.
(Cars = Toyota mr2, Mini cooper s, punto hgt 1.8L abarth and a saab 900 2L, lmao.)

So bassically i would like a good car for a 17 year old. It will probs need to be group 6 insurance or under.

Any ideas?

Put a lot of insurance quotes through, see what comes up cheapest. Then buy one of said cheap cars.

Put your mum and dad on as named (secondary) drivers, tend to knock a big chunk off.

The kiddies on here recently have been saying they are looking for insurance for under 2k, or thinking that is good. Personally 1k is excessive for insurance, even more so when you're 17 and therefore unlikely to have a grand knocking around. If insurance was going to be 2k I'd stick with bikes for another year.

What year? I'd usually take that as a reason to avoid as parts will be harder to come by...

You nudge a Corsa, there is gonna be 20 trillion of them in the local scrappy ready for you to butcher...

Why does every 17 year old want to pass their fucking driving test these days????? In my day it was a mark of homosexuality to be a car driver before your 20th birthday. Do you not want to spunk a load of cash on bikes for a few years first? I can assure you that unless you need a licence for career reasons then cars are something to worry about when you get a bit older and duller.

Anyway - anything that is both small engined and unpopular with the barry'd motor crowd should be just about insurable for a new driver.

I do want a bike Sad but my family are forcing my to get a car. I will definatly try to get another bike went im 21 but before then its a car.

If i get a job (which is flipping hard to find at the moment) i will get a 125.

I assume from this that your parents are shelling out for the car, insurance, lessons etc.

They may be disinclined to shell out once they see the price of insurance.

If you want to be different, the general recommendation to kiddies is to go for something old. If a hatchback is different from the crowd, its because its shit, expensive to run, or expensive to insure.

You may find a favourable quote on a morris 1000, austin A40, old mini, vauxhall viva etc. Something made by BL in the 50s-70s.

Of course, it will be shit. It will be slow, unreliable, rusty, draughty, and probably leak.

However, you'll learn to spanner, you'll look cool, and you'll develop a fixation for old cars.

I agree it is rather scary that 17 year olds are now prepared to shell out over a grand for something you might never use. I hated paying £850 for my first car insurance, any more and I'd have cried.

I should also add, if you buy a viva HB and don't like it, I'll have it off you. Want to stick a rover v8 in one.

I put in an insurance quote for a 206 1.1l 2002. It came back £850 and £920 with my parents on Confused

I guess the insurance only comes down when you put your parents on and have a full licence. So that doesnt work with a provisional.

I am buying my own car (i have a healthy amount of money for one) but parents are paying for insurance and the lessons are a birthday present.

However a old mini sounds nice, its just not practical because it will cost more to fix the thing every time theres a day in a month.

So i cant have a classic car. Needs to be newer

My fiesta 1.6si N reg cost me £980 full comp for a year, in my name with my dad on it.

I got a car because at the time, it made sense to me. I regularly carry large boxes of knives, which are not only heavy, but dangerous if I were to have a spill. Other equipment, clothing, etc etc, are heavy.

I use my car when I do my 120 mile round trip a week to see my ladyfriend as well.

Insurance fraud.

Company wont pay out in the event of a claim.

Fronting.

You wouldbe surprised, get someqoutes for all the cars in your house and see how it goes.

Everyone goes down te typical small hatch route which means a lot of people crash them and this pushes your premium up

LMAO are you joking?

How can that be fraud? they might not use it, but its nice to know that they can if they like.

Picture this, my parents cars are on the drive and mine is parked behind. They want to go out for a takeaway but they cant get there car out. So they can take mine because there on the insurance.

He's not saying put youself as a named driver, he's saying put your parents as additional drivers as it brings the price down somehow. I also noticed this. Another thing to note, fully comp is often cheaper than TPFT.

Don't quite know what you mean. I think you've taken it wrong.

You are down as the main driver. It is your car and your insurance policy. Just add parents TO the policy so they are insured in case they wish to use the car. It brings the price down and is totally legal to do.

So its only illegal if the parent is the main driver?

It is only counted as fronting, yes.

Otherwise, I am guilty of it too, by having my other half insured on my car, yet she rarely drives it.

Fronting is to have the vehicle insured in the parents name, with the child/less experienced party as a secondary user, yet they physically use the car more than the policy holder does.

They questioned me about this, I merely pointed out that I own two bikes, and out of the 2000 miles a month done on the car, I probably do 500? She seemed satisfied with that. Then I found out it was cheaper to be my own main driver anyway.
