I may have the opportunity to get an apprenticeship in plumbing. I was wondering if anyone on here has any information on it as a job? Is the pay ok (I know it won't be great during training) and is it a good job? Also, is there opportunities for expansion (own business maybe).

Cheers,

Matt

Depends if the boss wants a bit of sucky sucky 10 dolla. thats always a good money earner in apprenticeships.

Moneys good for apprentice as its a trade, good when your qualified, and of course you could start your own business but not many people have enough experiance of everything in their job to open one within the first 5-10 years.

Depends if you get Corgi certification and so on.

Knowing how you like to bend the rules, I suspect many cash in hand jobs will pay for your range rover and your kids private education like some of the plumbers and builders that I've come across over the years.

"Inland revenue? Oh, well I'm a builder so I don't pay tax."

That was honestly what this dude in a range rover said to me when I was doing volunteer work for a charity event. With registered charity events you can sign up for Gift aid where the revenue and customs will match any donation you make. The amount of people who shied away from signing up to it in case the HMRC audited them was crazy (you need their name and address).

"Hahaha! I don't pay tax mate!" He says as he wanders past with his seven kids each with expensive clothes, and his trophy wife adorned in cheap gold.

Makes me sick.

The thing with plumbers is that about 5 years ago everyone was in need of plumbers.

Loads of young people got apprenticeships and now the trade is overflowing with them, also a lot are going out of business due to the current economic climate. People just aren't getting new bathrooms or whatever. Yeah you will always need a plumber to fix your toilet or whatever but how many plumbers does it take to fix a toilet? Laughing

Don't know about plumbing, its a lot of manual work which you will have to do until you retire.

Gas Engineer is a decent well paid job and you can get apprenticeships doing that. My mentor has a big detatched house with a 911 turbo, kit car and 205 hill climber.

I'll give you some good free advice.

Whenever everybody says its good to be a [whatever] as they make loads of money this industry/sector/job is being bubbled and will shortly pop....

Happened with IT pre .com crash , happened with tulip mania, happened with the Nasdaq and happened with accountancy too.

18 months ago everybody was saying BUY PROPERTY it can only ever go up , Colin said buy property it only ever goes up....

Then he started to say it went up over the long term, now he doesn't even come defend his point anymore.

In bubbles only the first people who get into the bubbles many people break even while eveb more people lose.

Who was that person Joe Kennedy , was once given a stock tip by a shoe shine boy, he immediately cashed out everything what happened next? the 1929 crash and the great depression.

Marjay do you really not like plumbers or was that just the most random rant about people that wear cheap gold and have lots of kids. Laughing Laughing I hate those fuckers Wink

Matthie I started an apprenticeship with a small local company nearly a year ago, its a heating company so luckily I don't have to deal with poo Smile
It was a career change for me and so far I'm really enjoying it.
As much as I was bored of my old job I do miss the pay. I had to take a 50% pay cut to start the apprenticeship which put me on minimum wage, its not easy when you have bills to pay and you've got used to a certain life style to suddenly start living like a student.
The way my company seems to work is that you get a pay review every 6 months and as long as your making progress you get a pay rise, this goes on until your fully qualified and competent, at which point you'll be on a normal plumber/heating engineers wage.

I think a lot of people think that being a plumber is just fixing dripping taps and unblocking toilets, but in reality there is a lot more to learn, well if you want to get to a decent level rather then just being a handyman.

If you've been offered an apprenticeship then your pretty lucky, there are 12-13 people on my day release college course which have an apprenticeship with a company, yet there is a 3 year waiting list to get on the fulltime college course for people that don't have any kind of company apprenticeship.
The NVQ level2 course I'm doing is pretty basic (lots of health and safety bollox) its a one day a week, day release, 2 year course. You do a load of multiple choice tests, workshop assessments and some on the job assessments.

After that there is NVQ level3, unvented cylinders, Corgi, Oftec and probably a load of other courses depending on what kind of work you want to do.

It seems to be an in joke on building sites that plumbers have loads of money, but its not true mostly, on average its inline with other similar trades sparks ect.
People say that the market is over crowded with plumbers yet if you look on any Jobs websites plenty of ads for plumbing jobs still come up, If your qualified and experienced with a good record you stand a much better chance of finding work just like any other industry.

Might be a good idea to find out what kind of work the company that the apprenticeship is with do. If its all site work new build houses I'd be wary lots of new build stuff is being put on hold because of the downturn.

Not sure about setting up on your own, plenty do it. I guess with any kind of skill to offer that's a big headstart.
Friends keep asking me to look at things in there houses, but so far my tax dodger earnings have only been a couple of pints of Fosters Smile

Plumbing isnt going to be a career which doesnt require anyone to work in it within the forseeable future.

Ignore the bollocks above about it being oversubscribed. It's going to be hard to find work in any job at the moment, and if you dont pull your weight always will be. If youve got a bit of common sense and put in some effort then there will be work available most of the time, just dont expect it to turn you in to a millionaire like everybody does.

If you can get an apprenticeship with a national company doing social housing work then you will be onto a good thing,a constant supply of work and not a bad pay structure.

Haven't seen him on here for a while, last I herd was that he'd released all the equity from his house and was in the Bahamas with loads of drugs and hookers living it up off all the money he's made. Wink

An apprenticeship in a trade is a JOB FOR LIFE. Bubbles or no bubbles it's a job for life. If you are good, work hard and have a bit of luck on your side you will do well for yourself.

I'm a sparky, I should be fully qualified in January, work is slow at the moment but my job is secure and I will ALWAYS be needed in the industry, by someone, in any country... everyone needs an electrician (_____ insert trade name here) at some point be it industrial, commercial, agricultural, specialist whatever you name it, its a skilled trade.

It takes a few years to get qualified, and to be honest, paperwork is just... well.. paperwork.. experience is what counts, and that'll take a couple more years out running your own jobs (I don't mean running your own company, just running your own jobs for a company.. doing it yourself not helping out)

I would say go for it, but be committed... it's so pointless quitting half way into the course, waste of time! If you really want to do it... then see it through to the end... once you're qualified and have some experience.. you could become a mobile potato seller if you really wanted... but you'd be safe in the knowledge you could always go back to your trade....!

Do you feel the same way about electricians, fishermen, taxi drivers, market traders, shop owners, garages etc etc.

If not your a moron to think only tradesmen don't pay enough tax. Laughing

Don't get all defensive, I'm only talking about the sort of person who would ride a motorcycle with a fake plate to avoid speed cameras!

Seriously though, nearly every person who baulked at giving us their name and address for gift aid said that they were a builder.

I'm not being defensive, I pay the correct amount of tax and i'm not a builder.

Fact of the matter is, most people with their own business don't pay enough tax.

I don't know why it offends you so much, if i worked my arse off for 100 grand i wouldn't want to give 40% of it away either, especially when all it's spent on is helping immigrants and scumbags.

It offends me because I have to fucking well pay it, so why should other bastards get away with it just because they work for themselves?

You don't have to pay it at all, start your own business or if your not willing to take a risk, become a taxi driver.

Why kick and scream over it when ultimately you are the only one that can do anything about it? Confused

Where is the limit? Does it offend you that people who do your job may earn more than you? People who work less earn more than you? People who drive about brand new 5 series company car with all the bills paid?

Anyone whose got the balls to start their own business and take huge risks deserves to keep the money they've earned.

In your eyes, but not in the eyes of the law. And when it comes down to it, if the HMRC audited me and decided I owed them £40k which I didn't have in liquid cash, then I'd be risking making my family homeless etc.

I wouldn't do that If I had a wife and kids.

While thats a fair point about providing security for you family Marjay, but do you accept (even in attitude) that the amount of taxes and shit we pay is right?

Especially shown how our country doesnt particularly handle it very well?

Yes, but whether or not I agree I have to pay, so why are some people so 'speshul' that they are above the law on tax?

I could easily make cuts, GPs wages have doubled in the last 10 years.

The same reason some people are above the law regarding race cans, declaring modifications to insurance, speeding...
