ex police st1100's

Hi guys,

In my pursuit of buying a bike to commute to work on 3 times a week (150 mile round trip glossop - york) I've come a across a few ex police st1100's, for 3000 you can get a fsh'd pan, that needs a few mods to be able to go two up on them, but for just commuting on they seam like a bargain... anyone got one or have opinions on them, I think i high viz jacket and a white bike could make filtering a bit easier...

If there's one local to you, do yourself a favour and get a test ride on an Aprilia Futura before you commit to an ST1100. It's a bit of a quirky alternative, but it's nigh flawless at distance work whilst also being a bit less of a bus compared to the Pan

my uncle has an ex m.o.d pan, its a cracker (if you like that sort of thing) the only problem he had was converting the seat for a pillion, the proper seat and footpegs were hard to come by but he eventually got them.

the pan is a great bike for munching miles, comfy quick enough but imo it lacks a certain oomph. when i rode it i felt it was lacking in power.

They're ok as generally looked after.
Once upon a time through the police did all their servicing in-house. Now it's done by the dealers....and we know how they can throw the new apprentice at something and just hope for the best

However, be aware that a bike or two may have been thrown down the road too.

As said the conversion kits back to 2-up riding can be difficult to come by and expensive. You will also have to make do with various holes in the plastic where the gear has been removed. Mind you, as a winter hack/commuter these cosmetics should be ok and can be touched up over time.

FWIW the mod kit, if you can find it (try Witham-SV.com) does appear to be less worked than police alternatives.

Best contact the likes of Northern Pan Riders and/or Pan-Clan for more pros and cons. Also the MY-MC forum Honda section will be worth looking through for advice.

also if you end up getting one with all the strobes/radio equipment then get it dissconnected asap as it knackers your battery. my uncles had full strobe set up (front strobes, indicator strobes, headlight strobe, strobe on a pole, rear fogs, rear strobes, siren, and radio (was disconnected).i beleive it was used for escorting military vehicles.

it's not illegal for all the lights to be on the bike as long as you don't use them on the road. they can be used for shows, on private land etc. when my uncles got going it looked like a laser show. madness.

Guy I used to sit by at work had an old white police style bike. He used to wear a high viz coat and a white helmet - said people would actively trying to make way for him when he was filtering as they thought he was plod.
