Not sure if this has already been mentioned but incase it hasn't, take a look at the link. Looks like they are going to seperate the 2 parts of the new test into 2 modules which can be taken independantly of each other?

It's been around for the best part of a year, and has now been delayed incidently. As far as I know you have to take both parts together.

You can't do one part on one day then the second part on another.

Odd, that link suggests that the whole system is still open for public comment. Is the test due in March simply a harmonised version, and the off road test linked above a different beast entirely?

Unless the request for comments is the option of having it as two seperate tests, which would make sense as £90 really does seem to be a bit steep to get people to pay in 1 chunk.

Of course, paying anything at all for a test that the government insist you do is another argument entirely

That's the Twist Big_Ham, it says that it will cost you £10 for off-road module and £70 for the on-road module, did you read the statement?

"The motorcycle test fee will remain unchanged in March 2009. The price would be split across both modules – so candidates only have to pay for each section of the test as they take it. The proposed fee split is: £10 for Module 1 and £70 for Module 2."

Well as long as you could redo the first part until you pass then move onto the road part sounds fair enough, least it's only £10 a go then before you get to the road.

Thumbs Up

So one could take the test in 2 parts? manouvers one day, then road riding the next if you feel like it? Question

I would think they're proposing exactly that Thumbs Up

I've only read it quickly but I like the idea. Most compotent riders who have failed their test seem to have done so because of nerves, and paying £80 each time is alot. If you could take part 1 until you pass and only pay £10 a time would be good.

The link for the consultation paper

https://dsa.gov.uk/Documents/Consultation/mc%20test/consultation_paper.pdf

Makes some interesting reading, looks as though they're wanting to put the price up too October 2009 to an overall cost of £90.50

Module1: £15.50
Module2: £75.00

And the 2 modules are to be taken seperately, Module1 must be passed before you can progress to Module2.

I think a few people are mis-understanding this. It seems that they think you can ride around at your own will after taking module 1. If it is going to cost £15 for module 1 and then £75 for module to, obviously that is £90 so £30 more than the current price.

Yeah maybe nerves play a part in any test and they allow for this slightly at the start of the test but i can't see how splitting it into 2 seperate 'events' will make it any easier, probably a bit harder if anything.

I'm glad i took mine when it was just the normal test, rather than this 2 module malarky on 2 seperate days.

DSA’s Chief Executive Rosemary Thew said:

“Statistics show that motorcyclists are the most vulnerable road users – they make up just 1% of road traffic, but account for 20% of road deaths.

There are a certain amount of motorcyclists who go out there unprepared and inexperienced (e.g. the 40-year-old virgin-on-R1 brigade). But for a considerable percentage of the figures she is bandying about, the responsibility for the deaths of motorcyclists may quite likely be accounted for by the inexperience or ignorance of drivers of other vehicles, rather than inexperience of motorcyclists themselves, who - for the most part - are VERY aware of their vulnerability.

I actually think it more of a requirement as part of a driving test rather than a motorcycling test, that there should be a module where drivers-to-be undertake to travel about on other vehicles (bicycles/motorbikes) which would give them a broader understanding of feeling of the vulnerability involved, rather than just being allowed straight into a car.

Completely agree. After i got on my friends bike fir the first time/did my cbt i suddenly had a realisation that i do not look enough and i don't look carefully enough. Now i do i feel i'm a much better driver for it!

Only bike awareness training i got when taking my lessons in a car was "keep an eye out for bikes" but people need more than that Thumbs Up

If anyone watched Top Gear the other week when james may went to Finland, you will see how inadequate the training and test system is in this country.

I support modular testing for all vehicles, not only does it allow the learner to concentrate on one aspect, it could be designed so that the progression was logically and each subsequent module built on the previous one. That's not to say you need 100 modules to drive by yourself, but at a certain point through, say half way, you could drive solo, but on a restricted license (a la CBT ?) then have to complete the other modules within a specified time to gain a full entitlement.

Afterall, they don't expect 16 year olds to sit their entire GCSE syllabus in one test, do they.

+1

But (and this is entirely speculative) it does strike me that the whole basis for the UK system is that you should be able to do the whole thing without any 'official' training. The CBT (and, to a lesser extent, the DAS) is (iirc) the only official and compulsory training that you need to do- everything else allows you to be accompanied rather than taught. (cars through to HGV's).

It's obvious that if you want a country full of good drivers, then our system is not the way to do it. However, to move to a full on modular system with the costs and the industry that'll spring up around it will be an interesting experience! (I'm still griping about having to take a second theory test. I only took one a decade ago, ffs! Wink )

true, the cost implication would be interesting, considering the view on the current test fees.

But, what it comes down to is ending up with good drivers, or bad drivers. Any extra investment in training (both money and enahnced quality of training) could to have positive knock on effects such as reduced insurance premiums, less time spent at RTAs by emergency services etc.

Either way, I would be quite happy to pay for decent training, especially if it also meant other people were less likely to be trying to kill me.

I find it odd that the licensing for motorbikes and the licensing for cars works differently, when i say im restricted to 33bhp car drivers usually ask what CC that is, i tell them it can be a 600 restricted or just a low powered 250..

it confuses many many people, and from my own experience of passing car test (3 months of lessons, passed second time) and bike test (3 days of lessons, passed first time) i know which i think is more fulfilling of its job to train people.

Does this mean that you can take part one and then take part two say a month later to gain a license?
