Maybe a bit of a long shot on this forum, but worth an ask.

Got a trip planned for next year. 6 Months riding out across Europe, the Ukraine, Russia, heading down into Mongolia, then into Khazakstan (via russia) then heading south through to Iran to get back to Europe (subject to the border being open).

Currently got one mate interested, but would like a group of 4 as an optimum number. Obviously 6months away from home requires a fair bit of money, and giving up a fair bit of your life (job? partner? home?).

Nature of the trip is very much inspired by Mondo Enduro and Terra Circa. Gonna be done on a budget, and done as indepentantly as possible wild camping most of the way except in cities. 6 months is obviously a long period of time, but the idea is to create a laid back scedule whereby good roads, scenery, sights, cities and company can be enjoyed properly wherever encountered. Mile munching ain't no fun so why bother? There are hardly any sealed roads in Mongolia so off-roading and riding trails will be a feature of the trip.

Anyone interested drop us an email at nathancoy@ntlworld.com
And remember, this is next summer so there's just over 6months to prepare.

Are you that guy who has been advertising on gumtree? , the text is slightly different and he plans on going to China too (which is a no no due to laws CC restrictions etc) ...

Maybe you can team up with him...

but mid 2009? ie June/july? , I might be interested but I won't head back with you as I may not come back.

No I am not that guy. Like you say China is off limits. Kind of like doing a circular route round the Mediteranean - Sounds great but then you feel like a fool when you find out that it's impossible and has been for ages.

The "plan" at the moment is April - November.

Algeria has closed borders with Morroco meaning you have to go round to Mali and Mauritania and Niger..

Anedotally

Having read various books on this , this means having to pay enourmous amounts of money in bribes , as corrupt police will stop you at every opportunity and demand 'fines' to be allowed to pass.

I have a question.

As an estimate, how much do you think it's likely to cost for the 6 months. I know it's going to most likely depend on lot of variables, but just as a rough idea?

Lucky bugger being able to take 6 months out.
As I have commitments to my family and not being a movie star or a minor TV celebrity with a film crew in tow I can't justify taking the time and money.

Good luck though, waiting to see you post your diary, pics and YouTube videos.

I did a 3month trip on-tarmac in Europe 2 years ago. 18,500miles. Cost roughly £3,500.

On that trip I only free-camped a handful of times, otherwise stopping at camping sites and occasionally youth hostels (with a couple of hotels whilst dodging foul-weather in the balkans). Self catering consisted of buying bread and stuff to put in it, so ended up spending a fair amount of food, especially in the second half of the trip where I ate at restaurants almost every night.

In other words I'm aiming to spend substanscially less than £7000 if I can.

Btw tatters I got your email way back when but decided to put off replying till I started making firmer plans. Think there's someone else off here who I need to email/reply to.

I now own a DR350, and having been doing some trail riding on it which I really enjoyed. Focus for my trip will definately be riding off the tarmac carrying as little luggage as possible.

Petrol is alot cheap in eastern country's Russia was 40p per liter this summer and iran is around 6p per liter Laughing for the first 120 liters, so unless your basing that on European prices touring on RG500 its alot lower.

my bike does 250-300 miles on 30 liters (8.3 miles per liter 37.7mpg at the worst , so 20,000 miles would use 2409 liters at a average of say 50p per liter l,m looking at around £1204)

Dont give them fu*k all unless you really have to, l only payed up to a Russian cop as he caught me red handed with no bike insurance, they will always try it on but hold your ground and just be friendly to them chat shit and take photos etc and they will soon get bored.

Interesting..

Problem is I can't get the time off work and its a bad time to leave in the middle of a recession , unless I get laid off..... though I am going to go look at a DR350 this weekend.

Also the other cost of not having an income ie 10K + 5K travel cost = 15k!

That's true, but a significant portion of your income goes straight out on household bills and living costs. Living costs are factored into your holiday already, you can turn your gas and electric off at home, sort out an agreement on 50% refund on your water bill, cancel any direct debits for tv/phone etc you have running.

Only things you'd need to continue with would be mortgage/rent and home/building insurance, I think council tax must be paid too while your property is furnished. But if you try you can reduce the impact of losing out on 6months wages, as you say though, unless you're certain you won't lose your job it may not be the best time to do such a trip.

I'm planning do take a month off next summer which is all I could realistically achieve, and is all I want really.

Interesting point in that what would be the cost of an insurance policy for far and away policies? , I know morroco and Algeria let you buy it on the borders...

But what about:

Turkey
Azerbaijan
Georgia
Kazahstan
Mongolia
Russia
Israel
Lebannon
Syria
Egypt etc

This trip (I intend to do a faster version of Nath's trip on a bigger bike) is starting to get extremely expensive.

Outside the EU it,s insurance at the border or from a local business if insurance is a requirement in that country.

Israel is off limits by the way if you expect to leave by land again.

Is it? , I know a guy who's wife lives there, he says you can cross from Egypt to Israel and back , you can also cross into Jordan and via Jordan enter Syria..

While you can't cross into Lebannon or Syria via Israel directly, althoug I've also been told you can get a ferry to Cyprus and into Turkey also...

It isn't off limites however very large portion of the border is Syria which you aren't allowed to cross into from Israel, and thus must use Jordan or Lebanon which is a tad iffy.

All country's surrounding Israel do not recognize is as a country and most are still technically at war with Israel, when you enter Israeli border control you are give a small piece of paper to be stamped instead of your passport so that there is no evidence of visiting, so leaving directly by land is very risky as it clear that you have been in Israel and could be refused entry.

How is the Cheap Carnet going? , I've found mine is about £700ish after the 50% deposit is returned...... costs just keep adding up on this trip, such that I might make it MUCH bigger, ie do the Mondo Enduro run skipping the Zilov Gap and going to Vladivostok instead and pass through Mongolia also.

aw crap

Website is in German only, but since you now have to be a German resident with a German registered bike that's not likely to be a problem.

Oh wait you jammy git your bike is a German import!"
