I have no power in my garage, and therefore no lights Sad Id like to be able to work on the bike in the evenings, but its impossible in the dark.
Does anyone have any cheap-ish suggestions for battery powered lights?

Cheers
Ed

a long extension lead?

12v strip lights are quite good from a car battery, thats all i can suggest unless you have a small generator.

Extension lead is out of the picture im afraid, Its about 50m and im on the 3rd floor.

Would it be a simple case of get a car battery and wire up a regular bulb?

I use a 12v Inspection lamp they're also available as a flourescent strip, I hook mine up to an old battery, or the live one on the bike for quick jobs.

could also use a tilley lamp ( fishing lamp ) for a good allround light,

any chance of tapping the neighbours up n plugging an extension lead in ?? Laughing

The regular 60w bulb gives excellent light, but needs to be angled correctly to get the full benefit, plus it gives off loads of heat on a cold evening. Usually I can get 3 hours from a fully charged 12v motorcycle battery, there's more than likely to be a formula somewhere out there for working it out.

Nope, no chance of running a lead, the garages are all at the back of the flats sadly.

Can i expect to get the same sort of light from a inspection light and a car battery as from say, a 60w bulb??

12 volt lighting is never going to give you blackpool illuminations,

you will be able to see what you are doing but it's never gonna be like sitting in your living room with the light on,

a 60w bulb will last 2 hours on a 10ah battery.
60(w) divide by 12(v) = 5amps = 1 hour (5ah battery)

my car battery is 80ah so it would (should) last 16 hours.

Costs a bit more but see if you can find a good led light.

Something along these lines.

I used Draper rechargeable fluorescent lights before I ran an electricity cable to my garage. They were useable, but its much nicer to have power. And they only last for about four hours when fully charged.

I have 1x of these:

And 2x of these:

Don't forget the charger to charge them every day or you will be deep cycling them and they won't last long. Not forgetting needing to carry them back and forth to it. Wink

i'd look for a little "suitcase" generator that gives 12v and 240v ....

use the 240v to give you good lighting when the noise isn't going to create too much irritation and use the 12v to charge batteries for when it's getting too late to be having the genny droning...

i also like the idea of the tilley lamp as those give out plenty of heat along with lots of light and will help keep the chill off your workspace, but they are designed to be used outside (pier/beach fishing) so i've no idea if the gases given off in an enclosed garage would accumulate fast enough to be detrimental to your health...

the other problem with the tilley would be having to wait for it to cool before refilling, they get fookin hot

If you have space in the garage you could fairly easily build your own 12v generator, using a small lawnmower engine and a car alternator. you could box the engine inside a marine plywood box against an outside wall. Then add a couple of air bricks for venting, and extend the exhaust pipe out through a hole in the wall, possibly via a small additional silencer. Most mowwer engines are not that noisy and to charge a car battery you wouldn't have to to run it flat out either. The Batteries could then be permanently wired in to a charging circuit with a rectifier and you could wire in a cheap voltage meter, to know when the batteries are getting low and need the engine running. It's a bit of work and hassle, but if there is never going to be any chance of 240v power to your garage, then it won't cost alot to make with a secondhand motor, and some bits robbed from a car electrical system.

for around £50 there are small 2 stroke generators out there. they are quieter than 4 stroke and are around 500w (enough to run a power drill etc)
just run a tube from the exhaust to outside.

If your garage has any windows, you might want to add a solar trickle charger to keep the trips backwards and forwards for reacharging to a minimum.

LED lighting is a good bet, you can get LED's now that are very bright and they're far better on power than an incandescent or flourescent light.

Might get my brother (sparky) to wire me up something, Would be nice to not have to charge it ALL the time, wonder how many LEDS it would take to give off enough light to sit and work on the bike

Its only a rented place, so ill be out of here in october, so i wont bother with a generator. But thanks for the suggestions

Anyone in the Leeds area got any old car batteries?
