I Want To Learn The Guitar

Has anyone else managed to self teach themself the guitar?

We have a brand new Jim Deacon acoustic guitar in our house and I quite fancy learning a few of my favourite tunes.

Anyone with any advice?

There's a pile of sites out there, one of my favourites for lessons is https://www.ultimate-guitar.com whilst I mostly use www.chordie.com for music & lyrics.

It's easier to start playing with an electric guitar than an acoustic though

I've also been thinking about doing this... my question - and it's a bit odd - is, can you play the guitar and have fingernails? I don't have hugely long nails but they are definitely there, and I'm not sure if that's going to cause problems....

OK, best thing for you is this

Download GUITAR PRO 5 It's a midi- tabulature interface. You use the software to acclimatise yourself to how tabulature and a musical manuscript works. Futhermore, it has a very comprehensive chord and scale dictionary. It's really neat stuff. You have a pictorial of a fretboard that shows your finger positions and such like.

You download the tabs from somewhere like www.911tabs.com, but beware, theres so many people who think they can tab, but can't.

I started off with classical, but ended up doing 3 chord punk - which is a substantial downgrade. Guitar pro FOR THE WIN!

Self teaching is the best way. Start by tabs, learn the scales, major and minor - rather piss. The key is to get scales down pat. Chords are just however creative you want to be, because anything more than 2 notes is a chord! Learn the power chord/barre chord, it helps. On thing i've learnt is that if you're good at doing chords and scales on an acoustic, it'll be relatively easy once you make a transition to electric.

Guitar pro also has a metronome. So you can play in time and do speed training.

Don;t buy countless books. IT's a waste of time. Technique comes by practice and not by reading books. I've taught many friends the basics, but they've excelled beyond my capabilities and i'm very proud of them as a result. Learn "THE EAR" - every musicians skill lies in developing this skill. Also, after learning the basics, you can adapt it to whatever style of play you want. I just love classical, but i dont have the left hand finesse to sweep or shred, so i focus on melodic chords instead.

Guitar wise, get whatever is on offer - my recommendaton - yamaha pacifica if you want a starter electric It's always good to have more than one type of guitar.

got a mate to show me basic chords (E) and then started using www.justinguitar.com from then on.

there plenty of video tutorials on youtube for everything from basic to advanced.

I think essentially, the key is to learn the power chords. If you look at any of my "play along punk" on youtube, notice how the chord stucture remains the same, simply sliding it up and down the fretboard will produce a different chord, be it major or minor. You can even make it into 7th's, hybrids etc.

As much as i say learn chords, learning scales will definately allow you to develop your technique. I have to say tho, if you want to be anywhere near as good, you got to put in the hours - I've stopped playing for 8 months until i bought my other guitar and i basically have to relearn technique and feels like its never the same.

I'm self taught, not very good mind, but can play along to some of my favourite tunes.

Try learning G,C and D and you will find you can strum along to loads of tunes from Pink Floyd to Bon Jovi. As you get more into it, you can learn more chords and progressions and you will wonder why you thought it was hard to do.

I taught myself but I had been playing other instruments for 10 years before that, mainly the piano so I already had a decent grasp of how stuff works and can read music so switching to tabs was no probs.

Yeah, learn lots of chords. I never could be arsed much with chords and my index finger killed whenever I did bar/barre chords so I stuck mainly to solos and finger picking... First song I learnt on guitar was Nothing Else Matters by Metallica, as it is mainly just fingerythingying with some basic chords for the chorus.

So I think if you get a good grasp of chords then you will be much better off from the start, IMO.

My two cents anyway.

I joined a band as a bassist, as I also played bass, but in the breaks I'd play on the guitarist's electric guitar and they eventually kicked me out 'cos I was better than both of them!

It sounds really pleasing to know about such a great number of guitar enthusiasts. Well let me share my experience. Initially one has to choose among the option of approaching a tutor or else lay his complete concentration on the online guitar lessons. Either of these options provide us with the much needed skills to learn the art of playing guitar. But my personal suggestion would be to choose the online lessons as it has enormous collection on guitars,much needed for any guitar enthusiast be it even a beginner. One can improve upon being self dependent too and also to showcase one's talents.
