Hey all, my laptop is some cheap several year old piece of crap, but I'd like to get connected to the wireless network we have running in our house to download music (and porn obviously Very Happy).

Whats the cheapest way to get hooked into an EXISTING network, ie more after hardware then tariffs.

Edit: Check last post (by me)

i use a belkin pcmcia adapter. got it from PC World for £25 if i remember.
i got through 3 of them usb dongle things. the first one packed up after a couple of weeks and the other 2 snapped off while in the usb port at the back of my laptop.
admittedly one snapped when i fell up the stairs while slightly drunk but had no trouble issues what so ever with the belkin pcmcia one Thumbs Up

I won This cheap Dell router for £6.50.
Reflashed it with DD-WRT and set it up as a wireless bridge. I won't bore you with what DD-WRT can do but it's a lot more than standard routers.
Leave it in the corner downstairs, plug it in via ethernet (or wireless) to laptop and I have internets.

My £6.50 (or £1.50 + £5 P+P) router has now become an uber wireless adapter.

thing called a PCMCIA slot... usually has some blanking plate thing in it already. my laptop from the 60s had one, it had windows 95, so yours probably does.

Bah... I can deal with software. Hardware scares me. Probably like my opinions of cocks I suppose.

Will have a shifty.

So would people say the USB jobbies are a bit crap? Or just the hamfisted amongst you? Would prefer not to sacrifice a port if I'm honest, so I'll have a check.

That said, could I use that port for a video card? If I did, I could get Spore running Very HappyVery HappyVery HappyVery Happy

If the laptop has an Ethernet card, why not buy an ethernet cable and just wire it up, that is next to free.

Your wireless router should have at least 4 ports on it.

Alright then boyo's, just to thread resurrect as I'm getting arsed off using my dads computer (and getting blamed for ANY mess in the room Rolling Eyes).

Looked in comet/curries etc, and they can jog on.

Ebay seems a fraction of the price. However I'm a bit flummoxed by the whole G/N/G+ etc malarkey.

'I' have a Netgear WAG102 Dual Band Access point.

Would this work?

I would go cheaper, but I really want to still be able to watch movies/tv (obviously not porn Shifty) so could do with a good reciever strength.

Any tips? Its going in a Sony Viao running XP pro (if that makes any difference)

Edit:

Basically, can I just whack any card in my slot, and it will work? Therefore all I'm looking for is a high reciever speed?
