How do I measure my pit bike chain?

Basically, I dont know what size it is because its a cheap chinkey chain, and there is no stampings on the links.

It is either a 420 pitch chain, or a 428 pitch chain.

I have a digital caliper to measure it, Just need to know what to measure, and what the mm would be in terms of chain pitch.

So technically I can just measure one of the rollers in my caliper and if its 8.51mm then its a 428. And if its 7.77mm then its a 420.

I always thought that you measure from the centre of one pin to the next.
