Hi
Went to start my XJR1300 today and although the bike started OK The oil lamp came on after about 10 seconds.
Checked the level looks OK.
The bike does live outside but have never had this happen before.

It has been unused for about 5 weeks.

ANy ideas anyone?

Cheers

Ali

Your oil light works on a pressure switch not oil level. If it comes on you MUST turn the engine off immediately. The switches are quite prone to failing (where they come on too early or not at all) so your first step would be to buy a replacement. Before you do, check the wiring to make sure the wire isn't pinched or shorting on the frame or engine and that the end is still fixed tight on the switch.

Retried the bike today and the oil light now comes on for a few seconds then goes out. Previously the oil light stayed on until I started the engine but when I checked the Haynes manual it says that the light should go out and then when you start the bike come on then go off again! Can't remember it doing that but it's been that long since I rode it maybe my memory is playing up!
Confused

Hi

Yamahas often use oil level switches rather than oil pressure switches. They do quite often screw up.

All the best

Both my FJ1200s used to have the oil light come on when riding up very steep hills, leading me to believe they were oil level not oil pressure lights.

The XJR engine looks like the same basic engine as the old FJ, so I suspect it might also have a level sensor rather than a pressure type..
