To (supposedly) pay for the roads and maintaining them. It's a necessary evil, though I don't believe for one second that the all the money generated is used quite properly by the government/councils - same with fuel tax...

Really, I need to be elected Prime Minister, I'd sort things out properly... For a start we'd have a major cut back in unneccesary spending!

£15 for the bike, My car is something like £120, and my van is closer to £180 mark... Crying or Very sad Is a lot of money, especially round here, where the roads are terrible (even though they are inner town roads)

I agree, thing is, I would not have a problem paying a high amount of road tax if there roads were in good condition, or at least you could see some attempt was being made to sort the roads out, you know what I mean?

I know exactly what you're saying Thumbs Up

Before I moved up to Nottingham I was used to fairly good roads. They were smooth and well layered (well designed too...), round here, some of the roads are missing the surface tarmac, and I truely believe whoever designed the road layouts, particular in Notts city centre, and all the round abouts was taking class 'A' substances at the time!

It's all screwed so far as our transport infrastructure goes...

I can't quite see the point of having a tax disc. I've found it doesn't enhance the performance of my vehicle... Laughing Wink

If all of the money from road tax was actually spent on the road then it wouldn't bother me so much. But it doesn't and the roads are shit, so it sucks! Baboons bottoms, is what it sucks. Evil or Very Mad

I think the common view is that we would pay more tax if the roads were in decent condition. How about more tax to pay for a diesel cleaning unit on all roads?

I was going to move to Scotland a few years ago... Not for the roads, not for the culture, but for the girls with that beautiful Scottish accent (not the broad one, just subtle)... Sends shivers down my spine... Mind you, so does the middle England accent (which is just as well, otherwise my fiancee would not be happy Wink )

Eh? You want to come round my way sometime Wink Laughing

1 thing(of many) I don't agree with is the fact that i have to pay road tax for my bike at all. I've already paid 180 quid or whatever for road tax, I don't see why I should have to pay twice. Neutral

I did say that there are bad cases True Blue!!!

The reason you need to pay twice is because you have 2 vehicles on the road Smile

That's what happens when you have too much money! Laughing

And don't worry - the roads you'll be on during the rideout on the 9th are great!

Hi

Road tax (or VED as it is more properly known) is a pain. Currently we have 8 bikes and 4 cars legally on the road. That is around £300 for the bikes and over £400 for the cars.

On top of that is the fortune they get out of me in fuel duty, insurance premium tax and VAT on anything I buy for the bikes.

All the best

Keith

I might have two vehicles, but no matter how hard I try, I can't drive them both at the same time Wink Very Happy

How hot are they on coming down on you for no tax? I'm not talking about on the spot checks, but through the post when they haven't recieved a payment and they know who the bike is registred to.

Tax runs out end of this month. Get home on sunday, bank holiday on monday. Are they soo hot that i'll get shafted for doing it on the 1st on the month?

Remember there was a big ad campaign recently to say that they don't need to find your car w/o tax, it just flashes up on the computer and they presumably send you a fine forthwith. Leave it for a day w/o tax and I'd be surprised if they didn't try and grab some money..

Ye, you will get 'shafted' so to speak!

I pay £15 being on a 125! But the roads near me are just being relayed, so all is appreciated to all you people paying over the odd road tax! you are paying for a new road for me too ride on!

same for me. i paid my £15 road tax about a month ago, since then half the roads where i live have been relaid Very Happy

in some places the roads truly are a nightmare of potholes and manhole covers, so despite my own good fortune i can see what the rest of you are complaining about.

Erm no, they wont shaft you at all. they give at least a months grace as the tax is dated to the beginning of the month anyways. Also, with the present system, the post office has to send your details to the DVLA to say you've paid, they don't do this every day but wait until they have a few to send at once.
So Chill, if the Police stop you, just explain, they're fine with it and will just stick a flag on your record/reg to check by the end of the month.

oh no they wont Exclamation The Clio's tax ran out 31st July and I did not get to the post office straight way I taxed it from the start of the month about the 14th of August. In September I got a fine saying on about the 10th the car had been seen on the road at 6.10am (it was) and to pay £40 quid (I think) in 7 days or it was 400 quid. Based on this I am sure they can get you earlier.
You do get a months grace for sorm, ie If the bike it not on the road at all you have till the end of month to get a new disk or declare sorn. If you get seen on the road a fine and if the sorn is not in by the 1st of the month you get a fine.

You can get round it if you send them a copy of the tax-disc, as we did with Chez, to prove it was taxed from the start of the month.

Tax is a bit silly when the roads are so crap. Pot holes have got a lot to answer for. I can handle paying £15 for my bike, but £110 for my car is a lot to pay, especially since I only do about 7000 miles!
