Seven Segment Display to show your current gear

I have seen these on some bikes, I'm sure they come as standard but i was wondering can you fit them to your own bike to show you what gear your on?

Would it be hard to make?

Is there already a product out there which you just have to wire up?

Although I've thought that with a simple processor, and two push buttons you could easily knock your own together for a fraction of the cost.

Few bikes have them as standard. There are aftermarket ones, but they depend on the actual bike as to whether they will fit and work.

My chinese 125 has a digital display for what gear you are in. GSXF doesn't and it appears from the link above that they can only be fitted to bikes with electronic speedo?

And a digital rev counter, as the counter compares the two to calculate what gear you are in.

My Dad has one on his SV, it works pretty well but I do remember when we were on the motorway to pick up my ER5, I was on the pillion and I remember seeing the thing occasionally dropping from 6 to 5 on the display for no reason.

Mine has one as standard, don't know why as they are no good. I never use it, if you can't tell the gear you are in by the revs then you need to get to know your bike more instead if looking at a display by your sppedo.

I have not got one. The only time I want one is when I reach for seventh. The Versys is tuned down to have more mid range power hence it often feels in sixth that there should be more to come. There isn't.

I have learnt that (approx) the revs are two behind the speed; in sixth 4000 rpm=60mph - 5000 rpm = 70mph. So I no longer try and gear change up form sixth so much.

The only time I would ever find one useful is on a bike I'd never ridden before, but I wouldn't use it after a while.

Some of the Suzuki GS models had gear indicators in the 70's/80's. You'd think that all bikes would have them by now.

Even the stupidest of people can find themselves with 50 quid spare.
I wouldn't go applying that kind of reasoning too often in real life BTW it might not prove very reliable.

Your assumption that someone with enough money to buy a gear indicator (or a bike that comes fitted with one) is going to be well-educated. Often the complete opposite is the case.

I made my own for my bike (the aftermarket CDI in my bike doesnt give me the function of a neutral warning light on my dash so i made my own)

The off the shelf ones only work with an electronic speedo so that was out of the question for me... so i modified the switch on the gearbox that tells the CDI what gear the bike is in and attached this circuit to it:

You could knock one up pretty easily but tbh it's just as quick to ride the bike without one and learn whch gear you are in.

Or just count to six
