I have recently bought a Suzuki xf650 freewind and have noticed after adjusting the chain when it's on the center stand and then checking it again when sitting on the bike it's very loose does this mean I should tighen the rear shock.

I wouldn't have thought so, it sounds right to me that when you take it off the centre-stand that the chain remains or goes lack.
You wouldn't want the chain to tighten up in the normal driven position as it'd cause too much stress and stretch it, maybe damage the drive shaft bearings, and worse case scenario snap.

If you've followed Suzuki's instructions it should be fine, it may just look wrong.

It doesn't have a drive shaft if it's chain drive, you doofus. I know what you're refering to, but that isn't the name of it.. Wink

I'm refering to the shaft that comes out of the engine/gearbox assembly that the front sprocket is mounted to, too much tension here will cause the shaft to turn eccentrically and eventually shag the bearings it's supported by.

I know it's not a "shaft drive" and having owned one I'm in a position to know, forgive my lack of technically precise language. Rolling Eyes

Funnily enough the Suzuki manual describes it as the driveshaft...

Best thing I felt with mine (as it's quite a soft set-up) was to wind it up to the maximum setting and then take it back 2 turns. This'll be good enough for road riding, if you take a pillion or top-box then take it up a turn or stick it on maximum, if you intend to go off-road wind it down a turn or two (4 turns off max). Thumbs Up
