Been thinking about doing some organised exercise style stuff.... Did boxing ages ago and it was pretty good for exercise. Was considering looking at doing some other martial art... the main aim is general fitness (found I actually get down to exercise a whole load better when you've got some f'kin hard bloke shouting at you to do it Razz ), but I wouldn't complain at general 'skills'... had also considered just doing circuit training, though I don't know if I'd get past the first 10 minutes Razz.
Was considering kick boxing or boxing again, but would be interested to hear about people's experiences with other martial arts. Did do Judo when I was a kid, but looking for something a bit physically more intensive really.

I do Wing Chun Kung Fu,
its not exactly physically intensive though, its mainly skill and technique.

I find that its good for tension and that, but I can't say as its always a really good workout, it depends on what areas we work on.

I find the kicking drills to be the best workout!

I do thai-boxing and shootfighting(mixture of wrestling, boxing and thai kind of thing(like cage fights)).
I find thai boxing to be more beneficial to my fitness and I think you will find kick boxing the same.

As soon as I have recovered from a minor industrial injury I will be back at it! Laughing

Did tae kwon do for a few years but stopped for a while, i miss doing it so much... thing is (depending on your instructor probably) is has got "short comeings" as a martial art if your not 100% proficient (like if anyone is too close), if you want to fight well and quickly then you can learn kickboxing and boxing fast...
My instructor was a mean bugger left most times feeling knackerd and achy for days on end, also did it 3 times a week! ow...
Did lau gar for a while, nowhere near as hard work really, but it depends allot on who is teaching...
I'd like to try out capoiera, cause it looks cool mainly Razz wing chun, jujitsu and aikido maybe, but for fitness i think TKD does really well, also you get to scare your friends with your freakish ability to do the splits or kick people in the head who are loads taller than you (basically everyone in the class was) braking is fun too (apart from hitting the horse, or breaking your leg Shocked )

Did Taekwondo all last year 4 times a week. Need to get back into it though. The instructor was incredibly hard going. I loved sparring. It was so tiring though, especially against the black belts. Definetely a good one for fitness, but not the most practical for self defence. But it does look spectacular when you pull it off.

Used to do Karate, found it was good for general fitness and self confidence. Nowadays of course, I prefer recreational swimming, so I can enjoy myself with less targets to meet and still have exercise.

Hmm you'll find most martial arts no good for what your after G, I would suggest Kick boxing maybe Mui-tie at a push (if you want serious beatings).

Seriously though I've considered going to kick boxing for general fitness and toning as its a lot more in ring and training rather that kata and other martial arts training. Also learning how to take a hit is a VERY good form or conditioning and training.

So basically kick boxing would be my suggestion over martial arts (not forgetting I have a long history of martial arts - bushido is brutal!), be prepared to take a hit though, but learning to use your full 8 weapons takes a lot more out of you than the 2 boxing allows.

if you want more of my opinion have a word with me at the weekend mate when I ain't drunk or at least when I ain't typing.

Gav.

I have done many years of Karate to Shodan level, and have also trained and taught ninjutsu.

Ninjustu not really good for exercise though, as most fighting in this style is not sparring as you are taught to get rid of your enemy quickly.

Used to do Karate for a while (about a year or so) and found ir was best mainly for flexibility rather than getting fit/weight loss etc.

Felt a LOT better for doing it, but had to stop as work commitments got in the way (bugger!).

Now that I do nothing but sit in front of a computer most of the day I am thinking of other things to do. Lost just over a stone before xas just by cutting out the main things that put weight on and actually going out for a walk twice a day.

Sorry, turning into a weight loss post, wasn't planning on doing that! Rolling Eyes

Go for walks or push bike rides (the engined variety don't tend to have the same effect! Wink )

If you're looking for general fitness then the best thing is cardio/anaerobic work. Stuff like rowing/cycling/swimming/circuits, I would suggest running but I f*ucking hate tread mills.

Whereas if you want to do some fitness/self defence, I would have a look around the area and see what's about. Then do some research on what's on offer, you might find the first thing or two might not suit what you're looking to get out of it.

Unfortunately the whole martial arts thing became very popular again a few years ago and there's loads of shit schools/instructors about. A personal recommendation is always a good thing.

Otherwise I'd find a decent gym and get a good program put together. Somewhere close is always a bonus, it's too easy to make excuses!

I do Krav Maga, which is a very physical, strenous form of martial art. There are not many places where you can learn it outside London. It is the self defence 'system' of choice for the FBI, and Israeli Defence Forces.

I'm biased as you know but i'd say taekwondo, did it for years and my fitness level was great when I was at my peak.

It's a great all round workout and you do feel as if you've worked hard after a session. You can also move into the competition side like I did if you find you enjoy sparring (the best bit trust me.).

Competition and competition training is by far the best bit as it's fun but it also work's you the hardest, back when I was in the GB team I used to train 3 times a week for 2 hours and i'd never been fitter.

If your just looking for general fitness I would stick to the gym for the time being. One thing I would say is try to do it with someone else. You'll find you push yourself so much further basically cause you don't want your mate to call you a big poof for not doing that extra rep. Wink

I don't really have anyone else to go to the gym with. I find it far too easy to put off going to the gym as well. I have got a cheap but half decent multigym at home and I do use my cross trainer/rowing machine with some regularity, but it's always far too easy to put off.

Thus I'm looking for some kind of organised thing which I have to turn up for at a set time etc. Also, from when I did boxing I was always really knackered by the end, don't seem to get quite so knackered from just a general gym-workout. But then the boxing was for a couple of hours at least usually. Thus was wondering about other fighting sports/arts as far as fitness goes.

Ideally I'd prefer more of a 'boxing club' style place... rather than just organised leasons in a school hall or something.

That's one of the reasons why I want to get fitter... tend to be pretty knackered physically and mentally after a track day Smile.
