Hey guys

Bike = Honda CD250

i had a little slip in the ice last night, put the brakes on and the bike just slid out from underneath me to the left.

the only things hitting the ground was the front left of mudguard, left foot peg, gear selector (mangled), front left indi and bar end.

the gear selector is mangled out of shape, but when pushed down or up it will not change gear. its stuck in second, wont go to neutral or first or up to third.

https://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y41/doovydoo/IMG_0089.jpg

What may be the problem for not changing gear??

And also - the front wheel alignment seems to be out to the left, as were the handlebars (which i have unclamped and straightened now).

https://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y41/doovydoo/IMG_0092.jpg

How do i fix this too?

amazingly all paintwork is fully intact Smile

thanks for any help!

Dave

forks are probably twisted in the yokes. easy enough to fix. put it on the centrestand and loosen the forks from the yokes, then align the wheels with the handlebars.

as for the gear, you could have bent the selector shaft Confused

get a new lever or straighten the old one first though, just so you're sure. be careful though, it also looks like you've cracked your timing cover at one of the bolts.

It Wont change gear as the lever is not being pushed down far enough to select a lower gear or vice versa with going up....well it sounds like that anyways. Sometimes my bike doesnt click into gear unless i let clutch out to bite point if its running (At traffic lights for example) or move it forward or back with clutch in and try changing the gear. might just need the cogs turning inside or something to click out of that gear and into another or neutral. give it a bash, wheel bike forward with clutch in, and click down the gears. failing that, sounds like new lever required or a clamp and bending tool to make that straight again lol. i had to replace my gear lever after an accident. wouldnt go up gears, but when down them ok....just not enough movement...anyway my advice works for me on my unreliable cbr 125 lol. I wish you luck buddy

matt - thanks, will try that with the forks.

and no, its not a split, just a scratch where the outer layer of metal has been scratched away Smile

i have tried to straighten out the old lever, not much more it can go though..

and gaz - sorry i didnt make it clear enough, it does go all the way up and and all the way down without hitting anything, but it doesnt do the usual 'click' sound, just goes up/down smoothly without that click.

there is enough movement, just not doing anything Sad i tried the wheeling forward and going through gears with clutch.

thanks guys!

ill have a go with the forks tomorrow, and take it to nearby bike shop for gear trouble.

When i push down my lever or lift it, it moves a secondarly lever at inside of footrest to the gear box. its that moving on ur bike?

Hi,
the gear lever on this bike is bolted straight onto the spline (as per pic), unlike the cbr, which has a rod/lever running back from the spline to changer/lever.
sounds like it may be the gear selector fork(s),
the spline is turning, right? its not just slipping round the spline? (that would be too easy, lol)
cheers,
GAZ

thanks stirlinggaz, yeah the spline is definately turning!

and gaz-t1esto (how many gaz's are there?!?!) na it doesnt have a secondary lever, straight onto the spline.

aaaaaand.

i just tried loosening the forks off the yoke, but the two bolts are well and truly stuck in there, not coming off for me at all! tried torque wrench and spanner set, dont want to round the ends off..

trip to bike shop tomorrow stuck in second gear with 20 degree steering to the left to go forward Sad

i noticed that too, loads ppl on ere called gaz. lol

This bike issue is now above my level of knowledge. lol

when i had my accident all i done was removed the outer part of the lever and used the inner part to get bike in neutral, then replaced the damn thing. how britains roads cost us a fortune on maintainance and yet, we still play bloody tax to ride on them.

spray the shitout of it with penitrating fluid, then get a bit of heat on it, then smack it with a hammer, then try turning it.

I'll see what they say at the bike shop tomorrow, hope its not gonna be too costly!

as for your gear problem, i reckon you've snapped a selector fork.
for the lever to end up like that its been pushed up really hard, meaning you probably cant go up a gear. not too hard to fix if you know how.

im guessing its stuck in 1st gear? if thats the case, thats probably what it is.

maybe about £50-80 to fix including parts and labour?

Yep. Been there done that. Not a massive job it just involves taking the clutch cover and clutch off and the shaft pretty much just slides out.

hi,
get some plusgas onto the fork bolts, though they probably got threadlok on them & are well tight, so after soaking in plusgas overnight, use a breaker bar.
as for the gear selector fork, as gsxrmick says, take the clutch casing off & have a wee look, you'll probably see the problem, quite obviously.
either the gear selctor fork is "out" or bent, both of which are quite easy to fix.
if its really mashed up, the selector fork itself wont be expensive & not too difficult to replace.
hardest bit will be actually getting the part!
cheers,
GAZ

ok, thanks for all the help Very Happy

i will be taking to garage first thing tomorrow morning, see what they say. i really dont have the time this week to have a proper look or fix it, so depending on what the garage say (fix it this week for me), or i will fix it myself next week once i am off uni for few weeks break.

i would prefer to do it myself due to money cost, but i actually have never really done any work to the gears of motorbikes before! i am always willing to have a go with the work though, just need the right tools. im impressed i got the handlebars straight again, i also lowered them a lot for cafe racer look Laughing

I am a bit unsure of where to get a new gear selector from (if this is indeed the problem), would david silver spares have one for me.. i wonder...

Even if the part isn't listed on the website, i'm sure david silvers will be able to get one for you. Send 'em an email! Thumbs Up Smile

i sent them an email last night, got a reply this afternoon..

Hello

Thank you for your e-mail.

Gear lever - to order from Honda @ £22.98.
Rubber - in stock @ £1.95.
Selector forks - in stock @ £15.00 each.

We will need to know if the selector fork is R/H, L/H or centre.

Please quote estimate number 1****2.

Regards
Charles

So i also took it to the garage nearby this morning, they gonna check it over first thing tomorrow and let me know the damage (literally and monetarily lol). If they start asking stupid money for parts or whatever i have something to show them how much it could cost Smile i definately need a new gear lever, the rubber bit i can transfer over, but its the gear selector forks (or something else maybe?!?!) that i am not sure of what is wrong with them.

once i know the exact damage when the garage call me, i could probably sort it all out myself by ordering from david silvers.

on the upside, i rode it a few miles today and it felt nice to be back on it! even though it was stuck in third gear (pulling away was nightmare) and steering a bit off lol

Smile

yes originally i thought it was second, but when riding it more i realised it was third when it got up to 60.

good news though, got a call from the garage - the forks have been straightened, the gearbox examined and it turned out to have a spring that allows it to change gear came off, has been replaced and all is working again!

they have tightened the chain and also put some copper grease on the front pads for me, i was gonna get round to both the weekend but as its there as least it is now done.

new indicator on its way, along with gear lever and should all be returned to original glory!! Very Happy
