Hi,

I bought a bike on the weekend, a Honda CB250, but its had the 400 engine put in and registered. On the exhausts, where the silencer and downpipe meet, on both sides, it leaks oil.

It doesnt leak from the end of the silencer, just from the join, and some smoke in the mornings too.

Heres a pic of what comes out and i had it started only a few minutes.

Should i be worried that theres oil coming out of there or not?

Another thing, the gear lever linkage, its very wobbly and although it changes gears fine enough its not as i imagine it should be so what would i be looking to replace? or is it normal on these?

Thanks, Ant Thumbs Up Karma

Are you sure it's oil or is it watery carbon?

If there was that much oil in the exhaust it would be incredibly smokey.

Is the pinch bolt tight?

If the keys(?)/lines on the shaft are worn wrap a couple of layers of tinfoil around it and tighten it up again.

Theres a small amount of smoke on the choke in the morning and then after about a minute or two its fine, no smoke and the engine sounds good. (just a bit of smoke from the exhaust where it leaks)

How do you mean watery carbon? I only assumed it was oil because of the colour really Embarassed Or do you mean it could be condensation or something but the exhaust is coked up?

Edit: did a video, https://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=ezIywCXJWGQ youtube sound is a bit distorted but i think it sounds ok, right??, a bit slow at revving although i dont like to give to loads in neutral Laughing

Look underneath at the exhaust (when it's cold obv). Is there a perfectly round small hole in the bottom of the pipe? If so it's supposed to be there and the "oil" you're seeing on the floor is condensation from the low point in the exhaust. The hole is pre-drilled to allow that condensation a means of escape to stop the exhaust from rotting!

Great stuff guys Thumbs Up Smile

I thought i was going to have to keep an eye on the oil levels if it was going to do that every day.

One more think, can it be good for the bike to run at about 500-750 rpm like mine is at the moment, cant find the idle screw and dont wanna mess with it till the manual gets here. But surely it should be higher. Can winter/cold weather make a bike idle lower?

Once the engine is up to temperature your idle should always be the same - unless of course carb icing is occuring - in which case you'd know because as soon as you took the choke off it'd try and cut out (even if the temp gauge says it's warm enough).

It doesn't really matter that it's running at low revs, as long as it's a steady idle and it's not cutting out you'll be fine.

Should be doing that anyway.

If it's smoke on startup (and not steam) your stem seals will need doing soon as oil is passing them while the bike is stood overnight.

Yeah i know that, Thumbs Up
Its just if it was going to lose that much oil in a short amount of time then obviously i would have to take much more notice of oil levels until it was sorted, than the average check.

Thanks everyone Thumbs Up
