Hello all, im new to these forums.

Figured i woudl expand my knowledge by joining.
Im in the process of getting together some money so i can get my bike. 04' R1

I do not have all that much experance riding sportbikes, but i have experance on bikes. I have riden my friends 00' GSX-R750, and a friends R6.

Just figured i would say hello, and see how many people think im crazy for getting an R1 as my first sport bike.

Hi!

How much have you /ridden/ your friends bikes? Are you able to restrain yourself from trying to push the bike?
Around the block or for a quick spin on a dual carrigeway doesn't quite compare to thrashing on some twisties.
While I usually say new riders should be fine on a 600 if they take it easy, I wouldn't say the same about the r1.
It will scare you initially (hopefully) which will stop you doing anything to stupid, but the r1 can bite, hard, if you do something wrong. A twist of the wrist in the wrong place and you and the bike are flying through the air, in the bad way.

Personally at the very least I'd look at an r6 first, if you're intending to try and push the bike.
If you just want a bike to show off and go for lazy cruises with your mates, then by all means go for the r1, but I definitely wouldn't want it in your situation to try and thrash it.
Also on a 600 or even 400 you're likely to learn more and become a relatively faster rider when you do move up.

Trust, you don't want one of those 1 litre death traps first off, get a smaller ride like a 4 or 6, and work your way up over a period of months. Thats the best way i think.

And I thought my little 100 was quick, I can't even begin to imagine what an R1 is like, especially the new ones. The power is obsurd.

Personally I had my heart set on the R1 (failing finding a ZZR1100 which is near mint) being the first bike I had after full licence - forgiving any and all 125s. Mind you, I'm not one to try to ride the nackers off a bike on the road anyhow, and couldn't afford a trackday for a while after getting the bike. So it'd probably be the softest riden R1 in history Embarassed

Im not one to push the limits of a bike. Although i have riden bikes since i was 10 (mainly dirtbikes), i still dont feel comfortabel really pushing it.
When i did ride my friends bikes i still would not open them wide out. I have only really done that once and it was to get out of the way for a trucker who decided that he wanted in to my lane and didnt want to signal.
This will not be my first bike, just my first own sportbike. I have riden many 750cc dirtbikes, cruisers, and all kinds of things with less than 4 wheels (including 1 car LOL).
I realise that a R1 is still most likely to much power for me at this point but i also dont want to grow out of a 600 to fast.
Im currently 19 years old (for whom ever was asking), but have been riding for the past 9 years (last year i stoped riding for 8 months after my uncles death on a motorcycle, he was T-boned by a car on his goldwing ). But im ready to get back into the game.

Also - How are you going to afford to insure an R1 at 19!!!???

Yup, My insurance rates are quite low. I will be paying 130 a month for the insurance. So its to bad.

The worst thing is that i do not have my license yet. Im still in toe process of getting it. LOL. But i do ride (private land, no license required).

And as far as the BC licencing is concerned they don't care what bike or car you get, as long as they get there money.

Moving up from a 600 to a race tuned, down geared litre-class bike (well, 900cc), I wasn't actually that impressed. When pushed there isn't that much to split them, it's just that you can be lazier on the litre class bike... oh and you can mess up more on the 600 and get away with it.

If you at all intend to push your bike I'd strongly reccomend sticking with the 600.

My reason for getting the bike is 1) it is the best looking one out there IMO 2) That is the bike i have lusted over since i started riding 3) I can get a good deal on one.

Im not getting the bike so that i can beat all other bikes, I have sat on a few and even rode 1 (was a 00') and i found it fit me perfect. Im 5'11 235lbs and i find it had a comfortable seating position. Which is a big plus for me because i plan on using the bike for going on nice road trips to see family (3-10hour drive).

Could anyone give me performance numbers for a 04' R1? Im just curious to see all the stats for the bike because it seems that the only reason people are discouraged from getting one is because they have so much power.

You seem to have riden many bikes which is obviously to your benifit. However IMO you will enjoy a bike that you can ride properly without being scared of pushing it too far more.
