hi i have an aprilia rs 125 full power rotax 122 engine and i came on here to check if my hypothisis is correct lol when i start my bike it will make a loud almost like a squell sound and it wont tick over properlly now i think i know what it is ive taken the starter motor out cleaned it up wahlaa still happening so i looked in the old haynes manual and see another gear spline which is the bendix i looked at it and the teeth are worn on this so ive bought a new one and am currently waiting till thursday for a tool to get the flywheel off

can any one confirm or give any other ideas if it is the bendix or maybe something else

any help will be amazing thanks

Hi

It would be the first thing I would check. On the RS engine the starter Bendix is one gear that meshes with the starter motor and another that meshes with the gear on the flywheel. But the 2nd gear has an extra weight on it, and also slides along a coarse threaded shaft. As the starter spins the weighted gear slides along the thread, along the shaft and meshes with the flywheel. When you release the starter the gear should flick back along the shaft so it no longer meshes with the flywheel. However they can stick, hence stay meshing with the flywheel.
