I'm sure more knowledgeable people will be along soon...

I would suggest just taking the motorway with a service station stop to allow the engine to cool. As long as you are not in stop-start traffic or filtering slowly then you should be fine.

Would take longer to go the A roads but will be more fun also. Very Happy

At this time of year with the cool weather, cooling will not be a issue.....
Other than you needing to stop at just about every service station to warm yourself up. Shocked

Go for it. Just remember not to keep at the same rev's for prolonged periods. Thumbs Up

Cooling won't be an issue in the summer as you would be moving most the time anyway. Your body would complain long before the bike does in this weather. Mr. Green

shouldnt be a problem if you dont thrash it trying to keep up with other traffic and thinking you have to overtake everyone cause your on a motorcycle, pull in at the services every now and again check your oil before you head off, good luck

I did a few 100 miles motorway jaunts on my RS, it was fucking terrifying to be honest!! Laughing

Main thing is the bastard is so light, so unless the rider has some bulk you get blown all over.

Can be very frustrating getting up to speed, to only be cut up by some cunt in a Mondeo and have to start again.

Possibly slightly 'fun' in decent weather in daytime, in winter/night or for twice that distance, I'd probably not want to do it.

I wouldn't worry about cooling, my xr was covered in about a inch of mud, in the middle of summer while riding slowly through woods for 4 hours. I'm sure that the -10000 degrees wind will keep it nice and frosty.

Just dont hold it on full revs for longer than 6 hours Mr. Green

Its a honda, it'l be fine.

Ive owned around 20 hondas and not one has ever broke down. When the xr ran out of oil it wore the rocker arms down so much they looked like spoons, but it ran fine. I just put some fresh oil in and new rocker arms and it was good as new. That was above 10,000 miles ago. Thumbs Up

No reason for it to over-heat, especially on the motorway. Fitting even a tiny screen will greatly improve your comfot and help with the fuel economy (not that the 250RS needs much help). It'll also reduce the load on the engine.
I had a XJ1100 - a big old brute of a bike - and the wind-blast was terriffic on the motorway. I cade a small screen from a cut-down Hayabusa screen and the difference was staggering, could cruise comfortable at over a ton. I miss that bike Sad

Would a 200 mile motorway run (theoretically 1 tank) be ok to do on an air cooled old fogie? Or should i plan extra time and hassle and go the A roads with engine cooling stops?

I did a 250 mile run down to Devon on my RS with no problem. It was about 15 years old and had about 35k on the clock at the time, and I stuck to A roads purely to alleviate the boredom. I stopped 2 or 3 times, more for my arse's sake than the bike's.

200 miles on an air cooled bike is no problem.
Once took a Kawasaki GT550 from Aviemore to York in a day.
Mixture of A roads and motorway.
Rest stops were for my comfort and bike refuel.

I had a CB250RS about 15 years ago, and it was old then Smile, it should manage a long journey no problem at all. My one used to burn quite a bit of oil, so stopping at services every hour or so to stretch your legs and check the oil might be a good plan.

Make sure the wheel bearings are sound, whilst the engine should be more than happy, if the bearings are worn then a 200 mile journey may see them overheat and fail.

I did a few 40 mile runs on mine, wasnt too bad, but I was maxing it in top gear, which it never really liked.

Wasnt too uncomfortable with no screen, although tucking in when I had the screen was a bit better, as well as feet on the pillion pegs once you get into top gear.

Dont put clip-ons on it and do motorway work though, I felt crippled when I got off the other end.

Cheers
John

Look here https://www.motorcyclenews.com/MCN/advice/searchresults/MCN-Articles/2005/Feb16-05-wheel-bearings/?&R=EPI-681

Wheel bearing last a very long time, I had done 90,000 miles on my R1100RT when I sold it and they were still sound, but on a bike pushing 30 years old it will definitely be worth checking them even if its low mileage.

Should be fine, especially if your just sitting on the motorway.

I take/took my bike out for a 300 mile round trip without even checking it over before hand Embarassed

It was fine, I was thrashing it on b-roads and A-road most of the way and then down the motorway at over 10,000rmp for the bit home. It was only a 250 and did it perfectly fine.

If it is fairly reliable it will be totally fine I am sure.
