Evil or Very Mad

What the fuck? Thought we were supposed to look out for each other out there?

Filtering this morning, about to slip between two cars so I check my mirror and this bastard comes from nowhere at about 40 - would have completely taken me out if I hadn't have done that mirror check.

Dunno about you, but if I'm behind another biker I always assume he'll want to filter so I let him go first. If he hangs back, or shows no sign of wanting to come out only then do I go for it. I checked my mirror, I'd been filtering all down the road, and this guy still acts like I'm not going to even think about moving my position.

I'd expect this from a taxi or white van, but not a fellow two-wheeler.

There's good and bad in everyone and in every cross section of road users.

Why are you surprised by this?

I take Big's point but I was cut up by a filtering white CBR a couple of months ago and I was more shocked than I am when it happens by a car.

I suspect it is due to; the speed of the bike (little or no chance to anticiapte it), the thought that the rider should know how vulnarable bikers are (which most cagers don't) and the fact I was filtering pretty hard and this looney looked like he was on PCP and in charge of helicopter gunship.

But as Big Ham said I put it down to him being a wanker.

Me too - and exactly.

I posted on here a few weeks ago saying that I expect every road user to be a wanker, and that way I'm not surprised when I get cut up / whatever. And it's not like I expect bikers to be angels.

But in this situation this guy was just a complete twat.

Its life i'm sorry to say....
On my commute home i see some appalling riding in the worst conditions. I suppose because we do have a slight superiority complex that we expect bikers to be more courteous road users.

There is one particular individual (a courier) who thinks he's a Rossi Bulldozer. I'm just waiting for the day i find him flattened between a bus and van.

If you had to move across to slip between 2 cars I assume you were behind one and the biker was actually filtering. So you tried to move out from behind a car across a filtering bikers path.

Realistically you are in the wrong in my book, unless I have misunderstood your acount.

I'd dipped slightly behind one car as the gap had closed up momentarily, but when it opened up again I was ready to go for it.

That's why I'm annoyed really - cos if it had been clear filtering all the way I might have been in the wrong. But this road has bits where you can filter and bits where you can't, so this guy was also weaving, speeding then slowing, and should have given way to me.

Well if it was just momentarily, He could have been behind you for a while and took you moving over too mean that you where letting him though. Still the fact remains you where moving into his path.

I can see where he may have been coming for I filter like a whippet with its tail on fire and know how frustrating it is being stuck behind someone and I will go for the smallest gap. I feel if I have been stuck behind someone for a while and they will not move out the way they have lost the courtesy I would normally give bikers. I was stuck behind one bloke for a good 5 minutes I beeped my horn to get his attention and he gave me the finger. I took my next opportunity to get in front of him next may have put his back up though I did cut it close and fairly sure it would have made him hit on the anchors but IMO he lost all rights.

Absolutely - been there too. The key phrase there is 'the courtesy you would normally give bikers' - this is how I thought most of us ride, and this guy showed none of that.

If I'd been riding like a slow ass lane hog I wouldn't be pissed off, but I was filtering decently. He wasn't behind me before cos I would have noticed. And yeah, I understand I was moving into his path - that's why I checked my mirror first to see if anything was coming.

But, he obviously thought tha gap that you didn't thing was big enough was big enough for him. So he continued.

I wouldn't expect a rider behind me to stay behind me if he thought he could make it, all you had to do was let him pass and get on with your journey.

I can see where your coming from with this.

I was filtering along a road with 2 lanes of opposite traffic and 1 lane in my direction. There are lots of buses coming towards me so the filtering gap is often too small and so am forced to duck in and out.
The other day as why nipping in and out a bike pan euro thingy which was following decided that when i ducked in to avoid a bus he'd try and get in front before i pulled out again.
However there wasn't enough room so he had to pull in alongside me and the pillock nearly traded paint.
His judgment or impatience got the better of him and could have resulted in him on the floor or both of us.

No, that's not it. It wasn't that the gap was too small - it's that there was no gap there a moment before and when one opened up that I was about to go for he sped up into it with no consideration for me about to filter into it - as I had been doing all down the road.

If I see a gap that I reckon is too small for me to risk but someone else wants to go for it I stay well out of the way.

"There I was, filtering along at a steady 40mph when some plonker tries to pull out of the traffic in front of me. Nearly carved me right up. Only looked in their mirror at the last second.

You'd think a biker would have known I was coming."

Thinking

If you were going to change lane on a motorway, wou you expect traffic passing to your right to give way to you as you tried to pull out? Would you hell, you'd wait for a gap, then move into it. Same thing here.

Forgot to mention, it was a two lane road and I was in the right hand lane... So technically he was on my left.

I'm with Stinkwheel, et al'.

I do try and be extra careful around other bikes - but I would presume the bike already filtering to have priority.
'Cutting up' suggests the other person changed something they were doing to in your way - it seems this is what you were doing to the other rider.

I have nearly done it myself in the past (about to pull out, didn't check and almost stuck myself infront of a 'blade filtering at a reasonable rate). Now I make a point of doing a decent shoulder check before pulling out into a 'filtering position' before doing so.

'No gap' is very relative - I've been filtering past few bikes that have stopped filtering this week despite with my big panniers (over a 1m wide, about 3/5ths the width of my car!) Similarly, there have been cases in the past when I've thought 'no way' and someone else on a wider bike has scraped through.

I take everyone's points - but check back through my posts, I don't moan at the drop of a hat. I moaned this time cos I really thought the guy was unreasonable, even taking into account 'putting myself in the other guys shoes'.

That said, I'm over it now (beer has helped Thumbs Up ) and no lasting damage, which is the main thing on these dark, icy, winter evenings.

There's a lot of bikers that ride like car drivers, sit in the middle right in the filtering-path and only pass-between vehicles through jumbo-jet-sized gaps. They'll accellerate when the road is clear then sit like numpties at the next 'obstruction'. These are the only ones who suffer a lack of courtesy from me.

You'll have to get used to placing yourself on the road a bit better. Make your movements postive and if you're waiting for a gap stay on your line then move smartly through it. Passing between adjacent vehicles is infinately more safe than passing vehicles that are staggered on the road. Let faster bikes pass and watch your mirrors. If there's a queue developing behind you it's a good sign that they want you to get out of the way.

As i know there is no filtering code that says if someone has stopped that you must give way to let them back out? Wink Laughing

Perhaps not but as he was technically overtaking the onus was on the passing rider to make his move safely. TBH the OP sounds a bit lacking in riding confidence.
