Just brought my Dad his CBT so that he can get back on a bike - he had one like a million years ago. Found this picture of him when he was 20, he says he brought it brand new for like £250. I just love his lid! lmao Laughing

if he had a bike why didn't he have a license?

(presuming you meant bought not brought, as brought make no sense in your sentence)

He's on L plates in the pic, so I'd guess that he was on a provisional at the time...

Remember kids, bikes aren't like lego. You can't easily take a part from one bike and then fit it to another.

He purchased the bike. He never had a full bike license and back then he could ride on his car license.

Back in the good ol' days, there were people riding bikes on L plates for 10-20 years. They usually rode step throughs, had scabby open face crash helmets, top boxes held shut with bungees and smoked roll ups whilst riding. They did exactly 30mph everywhere, even through red lights. A full car licence gave you an automatic provisional for up to a 250cc bike.

It was mainly cos of them that the first two part bike test came in, along with the pass within 2 years or get banned from riding a bike for a year rule. This was itself replaced with the CBT etc.

Hence the '1971ish' - couldn't be bothered to work it out. Mr. Green I'll have to post a then and now picture as soon as I have one. He's put on a bit of weight since, so unfortunatly the funky gear is a no no Crying or Very sad

"Later" being 1st September 2001. Might be around the time popup headlights on cars were made a no-no.

Anything after that date can't have a front number plate, anything before it's optional.

Not sure they are illegal. Just gone out of fashion as they alter the aerodynamics when they are raised.

All the best

£250 was a lot of money back then, at an educated guess it was equal in todays standard to £88 million, but you did get a free helmet to try to encourage people to wear them and the arrow was law to let drivers know which way you were going as back then motorcycles had a uniform shape which made it difficult to tell the front from the back, honest!

That CB125S Cool brings back a lot of memories from the early seventies.
My pal Tommy had one and I had its bigger brother the CB175K6.
The runs and fun we had on these bikes, we were never in, out to all hours on them.
Ahh memories Very Happy
