Okay some of you may know that my VFR was written off in August of this year by a kind woman attempting as good as inserting her Astra into the back of it.

In short, it was billed to be a category C writeoff.

In typical cypher style, I opted to rebuild my pride and joy. To stay on the safe side of things... I bought a new frame with V5 off trusty ebay. This presents a number of issues that some of you lot with past experiences might be able to help me with.

Does the V5 for the old reg allow you to change the frame number? If so, is it an issue to have a bike that is known to be a cat C?

If the frame number on the original reg cannot be updated to the one from the new (or new to me) frame, this will mean I can do one of two things from what I have worked out (and feel free to correct me if I am wrong).

If I use the reg that comes with the new frame, then that means the registered milage (according to V5 and MOT records) is double that of what the engine has actually done. Iirc - 28,000km compared to the new frame's registered 50,000km. A huge milage discrepancy.

Is it possible to update the national milage register for it?

What about plate transfer? Does this transfer all details attached to it?

What do you lot think I should do?

Thanks in advance. Wink
Thumbs Up

Can I ask why you're changing the frame on a Cat C bike???

Cat C is cosmetic damage only and the frame should be as it was before the crash.

Don't change the frame just to clear a cat c title, it's rarely worth the time, hassle and money... cat C isn't a major problem as long as you're honest when selling and the price reflects... assuming you bought the bike back fairly cheap from the insurance company as well?

Since the bike is a total loss you'll already have been paid out on it. What do you care about the mileage etc it now has an insurable value of it's scrap value. You're not losing out as you've already been paid in full once.

I just sold my Cat C Cbr125 at a ridiculously low price...

I'd already been paid out and didn't care about waiting for it to sell.

You should just repair what damage is done to the bike without replacing the frame.

Is there any way to find out what category insurance write off a bike is without being told? In other words will a HPI check show it on the report? I don't recall ever seeing it on a HPI.

I have a feeling my bike was a write off before I bought it but I can't see it on a HPI or anything. Confused

are you sure?

Quote:
Category C - Repairable salvage. Usually applies to motorcycles with significant frame damage, where cost of repairs exceeds book value. Can be sold complete to Motorcycle Trade or Public. Recorded as "Category C" at DVLA. Category C vehicles' V5 documents are returned to DVLA. You re-apply, to DVLA or at your local VRO, for registration on the original identity once you have fixed it up, MOTed it and want to Tax it. Re-registration removes the Category C classification, but evidence it was at one time Category C remains on the vehicle's record at DVLA (and HPI and AA and the others).

I changed the frame to be on the safe side - after all an Astra belting into the back/up-the-right of the VFR at 70mph wasnt appreciated, I dont think the guy who looked at it knew what he was looking at anyway so called it as cat C. Plus upon stripdown I thought I saw a crack in it near the swingarm pivot.

Its the other sides insurance we are dealing with and I said I was keeping the salvage when the loss adjuster came round. Got it back into my garage before they got their grubby mitts on it so I didnt need to buy it back off em.

Tbh guys while the suggestions are all well and good, its pretty much forgone conclusion. The old engine is sat in the new frame right now. I was just hoping any of you could answer the questions I had. Thumbs Up

Smile

Mileage stays with the frame, and NOT the engine. EG when a vehicle blows its old engine and gets a new one fitted you can't just say a 100,000 mile car with a new engine has done zero miles.

I'm afraid you are stuck with 50k registered to that frame.
