its ruins your bike, you cant even set off from a set of lights without you back wheel deciding to spin like f**k, god forbid your journey has a corner in it Shocked the front feels like its going to wash out constantly... or the rear end doesnt roll round corners, it either spins like f**k or skids round them. Not to mention if someone pulls out on you... you cant brake hard... you start off soft... try to get harder... nope fronts going twitchy... do you roll into the back of someone using 10% of the bikes braking or slide into them?

luckily i didnt have to ride in the snow yesterday.... the pleasures of riding a ducati, it decided it was a bit cold, stupidly i decided to solve the problem by trying to give it a bit of fuel... nope didnt like that 1 bit. so off come the spark plugs which are quite easy to get to i must admit, but god forbid you try and start a big twin in anything other than ideal conditions...
spark plugs in and out 50 times and nicking 3 batteries to try and get enough power to turn over the dam engine.
so what have i learned? ducati's like spark plugs that have been heated up to stupidly high temps. using oxy setaline and massive amounts of easy start Mr. Green

should be fun tomorrow morning... temperamental ducati and snow... yay! Neutral
i want a car.

Only thing I'm noticing is couple of rear wheel spins and losing grip big time on man hole covers.

I want it to snow cause I wanna ride in the snow.

Just apply even pressure to front and back brake slowly and drive slower than usual.

It's fine bombing it on Dual carriage ways and motorways that are empty but streets with built up traffic traveling normal speed go a bit slower, if the car in front suddenly brakes you're screwed.

Maybe you should just ride appropriate to the conditions. If you are spinning your wheel when setting off from lights, don't give it so much on the right wrist. Ride slower so that if someone does pull out on you you don't have to brake so hard. It really is not rocket science.

As for thinking the front is going to lose grip on cornering, nothing much you can do there, other than slow down. Oh, and apply correct cornering technique, which I'm sure you do all the time. Wink

I don't have any problem starting my litre v-twin in this temperature. I don't see why the Ducati won't start either. The only real reason should be a duff battery in my opinion. Get the battery charged or replace it with a proper one.

Oh and don't open the throttle when trying to start it. Just pull the fast idle back and press the starter. When you introduce fuel into the combustion chamber it becomes harder to compress and hence harder to crank the engine. This can also affect the starter clutch (sprag clutch) and can wear it out.

I think you need to be smoother with your throttle and a bit more controlled with your clutch. You can also use the rear brake to help with balance and control mid corner and whilst pulling away, just treat every start like a hill-start and use a little rear.

I haven't managed to spin the back wheel once since I've owned the bike (DL1000 100bhp+ 68lbft torque) and I have a TRE fitted which gives me full torque in the lower gears.

You just have to be really careful that's all, yes the front wibbles about constantly, yes the rear tries to step out side-ways on every bend, but you gotta roll with it, compensate, relax, ease off a little.

And if you find yourself making no more progress than the cars and other vehicles around you, so what at least you get home in one piece.

Make like the weather and chill... Cool

It isnt hard Half_Lyfe, yeah you get the occasional spin-up (not avoidable all the time) and slip, but it shouldnt dominate your journey.

Treat winter like a training session.

Yeah, you have to slow down, but practice hanging off the bike a bit more and thus keeping the bike upright in corners. Doesnt matter if you look a little strange.

But Slow => Smooth and Smooth => Fast

Then get your arse on trackdays in Summer, and see what its like to really ride a bike fast*. Wink

*Fast for "normal" people who are decent riders. Not fast for you racer types. Shush.

This weather is "revenge of the audi / bmw driver" as they now try and bully intimidate you especially when your trying to negotiate a roundabout covered in rainbows and any throttle results in a spinning back tyre.

As happened this morning to me. Massive rainbow all the way round the roundabout so had to go slow when this stroker leans on the horn for a good 30 seconds at a time and i can see him gesticulating wildly in my mirror.

Finally he passes and nails it off up the slip road smug in his victory.

Just wait till summer......Return of the biker.

theres just nothing you can do at the moment with little grip and cold tyres except stick your head down and get on with it.

What people seem to forget is that wide tyred supersports bikes are not ideal for cold/rainy/snowy conditions. Even off road bikes with enduro tyres aren't ideal for those conditions.

What you want is a nice commuter with a pair of narrow crossplies. Perfect! Smile
