registering an off road bike

hey i havent posted for a while but i recently wrote my bike off not my fault but im now looking at an rm 125 but how if you can do you transfer it from field to road.???? please help

Hi

While it is possible, it isn't a quick 5 minute job. Depending on the age of the bike you will need to put it through SVA, and for that you will need it quiet enough and with acceptable lights, as well as various rules on speedos, sharp edges, etc.

the bike i was looking at is the 125 cc suzuki rm its the 2003 model i was hoping to cross it over but i dont no if i should. what will i need to do

Hi

It will need to be quiet enough, have an electric horn, road legal tyres, mph AND kmh speedo (must show both or be switchable) and various things not being sharp edged. No doubt loads of other things as well.

While you might be able to get away without lights and indicators, if you have a rear light then pretty much all the other lights become compulsory.

While it is possible it will not be that easy or cheap.

it doesnt have a rear light but i would get all that fitted i was hoping there would be a set amount for it all to be done. how would i register it with the road

I remember considering converting a few bikes for OTR use, myself before getting the Africa Twin , it effectively said spend £100 on an SVA test and expect it to fail and spend another £100 on an SVA test, and a frame stamp , lots and lots of hoops to jump through.

Hi

SVA = Single Vehicle Approval. Basically a far more in depth MOT, but done by a Vosa testing station (not just an MOT station) and checking not only MOT items but also things that are required for it to be road legal (eg, E marked lights, mph / kmh speedo, etc).

Not wanting to sound patronising.. "But" all the information in this thread doesnt seem to be getting through. It is possible, but with the amount of questions you have asked including asking a garage for quotes etc. It doesnt sound like you have the experiance or knowledge required, it`ll end up costing you a fortune.
If you do manage it, just remember that a motocross bike will be tuned to make the most power possible at the cost of reliability and service intervals.
I think you`d be far better off looking at the ktm 125, or the husky 125 although bear in mind these still wont be L plate legal

im nt very good i only started riding about 8months ago on a l plate but need a new bike. i have an off road bike and i thought of converting iit is that a bad idea then

Well based on the costs of putting an off road bike OTR you might as well buy a road legal bike with off road capabilities , plenty out there, to make it more of an off road machine its a case of tyres, and moving the front mud guard up about a foot, and try to lose some weight off the bike (and yourself)..

where the mud guard is really close to the wheel and thus will get clogged with mud when you start taking it seriously off road...

Which is why I'm hawking on ebay for some WR450 forks and front end for the Africa twin myself
